The public is invited to join the Guthrie County Historical Village Foundation on Saturday, Aug. 24 for an evening of education, food, fun and fundraising for Baker No. 2 School, which is located at the Guthrie County Fairgrounds in Guthrie Center.

Baker No. 2 school is the last historical building standing in the floodplain of the fairgrounds, and efforts are underway to secure funding for the $14,000 needed to move the schoolhouse to the west side of the grounds. Once in its new location, the interior will be restored so the schoolhouse will be around for future generations to visit.

The schedule of events includes:

  • 5-7 p.m.: Explore the Village and Tour Cass No. 7
  • 5:15 p.m.: History of Guthrie County Country Schools by Rod Stanley
  • 6 p.m.: Root Beer Floats by GCHV Foundation, Hot Dogs and Drinks by GCCB
  • 6-7 p.m.: “Vintage Voices” Guitar and Fiddle Duo

Bring your lawn chair to enjoy the music at the Village. Freewill donations are welcomed. All proceeds go to Baker No. 2.

Cleaning and restoring headstones

On Saturday, Sept. 7, beginning at 9 a.m., the public is invited to a hands-on program of cleaning and restoring headstones. The event will be held at West Cemetery in Panora (next to the high school).

This program is designed to educate and assist in the networking of people interested in protecting, restoring and preserving our historic cemeteries. Attendees will learn how to clean and repair broken tombstones, headstones and monuments.

Wear cool, comfortable work clothing (you will be cleaning and scrubbing headstones) and bring a hat for shade and some water to stay hydrated.
