Kalbach named to Graceland University’s spring 2024 President’s List

The honor roll lists for Graceland University’s 2024 spring term have been announced, and Alexander Kalbach of Stuart has been named to the President’s List. Graceland University students with a perfect 4.0 grade point average are named to the President’s List.

The Graceland University President’s List students represent a diverse range of academic disciplines, reflecting Graceland’s commitment to a well-rounded and comprehensive educational experience. Their achievements highlight the University’s dedication to providing a challenging and intellectually stimulating environment that nurtures the growth and development of future transformational leaders.

Grubbs named to Wartburg College Winter/May Term Dean’s List

Tatum Grubbs of Casey was named to the Wartburg College Winter/May Term Dean’s List.

The college recognized 466 students for Winter/May Term. The list honors students who earned a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or above in at least five course credits during the terms. Four of the five course credits have to be graded with a traditional letter grade. Wartburg students take four courses during Winter Term, which runs from January through April, and one course during the one-month May Term.

Cribbage results from June 7 and June 10

On June 7, a total of five players participated. Players met at the home of Rhonda Titus in Bagley. Titus produced a 16 and a 17, Robert Klever had a 17 and an 18, Jane Buckus got a 16, and Phel Beck had a 24.

On June 10, a total of 12 players participated. Sandy Rumblehart was the hot player with a 16, 20 and 16. Jim Carico snuck in with a 21.

The Guthrie Center cribbage players generally meet at Guthrie Center Library on Mondays at 8 a.m., at the assisted living rec room at 8 a.m. on Wednesdays, and at the Guthrie Center Activity Center at 1 p.m. on Fridays. Organizers say there is always room for more, and they will be glad to teach you how to play. They play for quarters on Wednesday and Friday. For more information, email 58chevy@netins.net.

Klemish receives top Lions state leadership award

Ken Klemish, a member of the Adair Lions Club, received the G.E. “Bud” Klise Leadership Award, the Lions Clubs of Iowa highest leadership award, at the 2024 Iowa Lions state convention. One Iowa recipient has been named each year for the past 36 years to recognize outstanding leadership ability at all levels of Lions: club, district, state and international. The award is presented in honor of Lions Clubs International Past International Director Bud Klise from Iowa, who exemplified leadership as he served his fellow man.

A Lion for 38 years, Klemish has served in numerous leadership positions in the Adair Club as president, secretary, treasurer and LCIF Chair. At the district level, he served as district governor, zone chair, membership chair, LCIF chair, Leader Dog chair, Guiding Lion, and New Club Extension Chair, helping to start four new clubs. He has been instructor for district officers more than 20 years. Klemish received the District Lion of the Year and the District Outstanding Service Award. At the state level, he served as Iowa Lions Foundation Trustee. On the international level, he served on the Midwest Leadership Conference leadership team, on the USA/Canada Lions Forum Planning and Host Committees, and presented many Lions seminars across the USA at district/state Lions conventions. He helped raise the funds for Leader Dogs for the Blind Canine Center. He has received many International Presidential, Leadership and LCIF medals. 

Local community leadership by the individual is included in the Klise award consideration. Klemish has served in Adair as a Cub Scout leader, city zoning commissioner, local church board, and was Adair Citizen of the Year in 1994. He co-chaired Adair’s 125th anniversary celebration, and he worked at a local John Deere store for 53 years.

Cory Robert Beer 

1985-2024

Cory Robert Beer passed away in a car accident on June 4, 2024, at 35 years old. Visitation was on Monday, June 10 at 9 a.m. with funeral services at 10 a.m. located at Twigg Funeral Home in Panora. Burial will be at Union Cemetery in Guthrie Center. Following the graveside service, there will be a luncheon at the activity center in Guthrie Center (209 State St., Guthrie Center, IA 50115)

Cory was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert and Helen Beer, Yolanda Howell and Eddie Tallman; his sister, Emily Beer; his uncle, Kevin Tallman; and his cousin, Clint Kirkpatrick.

Cory is survived by his parents, John and Tracy Beer; and sons, Bryan and Koltyn Beer. Others surviving him are Gabe and Brogan Littlejohn; sister, Whitney (Cody) Zickefoose; nephews, Tucker Beer, Micheal and Owen Zickefoose; nieces, Heather and Liberty Zickefoose; grandparents, Tolly (Pam) Howell; aunts, Connie (Todd) Kirkpatrick, Stephanie Tallman and Angela (Terry) Schnoor; uncles, Larry (Nancy) Tallman and Chad (Meghan) Howell; cousins, Matt (Amanda) Kirkpatrick, Sarah (Clay) Ivonavitch, Matt Tallman, Tyler (Allison) Howell, Alex Howell, Kylee Howell, Maci Schnoor and Dylan Bowling.

Cory was a free spirit in life. He was always there to give a helping hand. Cory held no judgment or prejudice for anyone. No matter who you were or where you were, Cory was there to help in any way he could. Cory’s passion was working on vehicles, any shape and size. Cory also loved the small things in life like fishing, hanging out with his friends, and, most especially, spending time with his boys. Cory loved to cheer for his favorite teams such as the Miami Dolphins and the Carolina TarHeels. 

Cory’s death has left a deep hole in the hearts of the ones who loved him. Cory will be forever loved and missed, and his memories will be cherished.
