CHINA SHOES AND FOOTBALL. These are the hobbies of Thelma and Bob Richey of Panora. Thelma holds a china shoe she bought for $15 at an antique store in Arizona. The shoe’s original asking price was $80. Bob, an avid Denver Broncos fan, is holding his football, which usually gets used by his grandchildren.

LIONS HONOR JANVRIN. Kip Janvrin of Panora was presented a Certificate of Outstanding Achievement and $25 by the Panora Lions Cub at its annual family night picnic. Kip was honored for placing ninth in the Decathlon in National Junior Olympic competition held recently in Los Angeles, California. He placed first with a national record in the 1,500-meter event. The Lions Club picnic was held at the Waterworks Park Aug. 16. Pictured is President Bill Dahl making the presentation to Janvrin.

TREE ROOTS IN SEWER LINES? Tree limbs obstructing phone lines is not unusual, but tree roots in sewer lines is another story. Guthrie Center City Maintenance Coordinator Bob Secoy loads sections of tree roots dug out of a 15-inch sewer main on South Seventh Street. The roots, drawn by the moisture in the sewer line, plugged the line, causing a sewage back-up in the basements of local residents.

BUILDING BOOM CONTINUES. Ground was broken for the Clover Ridge Conference Center, located in the middle of the front nine at the Lake Panorama National Golf Course. The conference center will be nearly 16,000 square feet and will be 2½ stories with an outdoor swimming pool. In the background is the Clover Ridge townhouse development. The conference center is located southwest of number one green.
