UP ON THE ROOFTOPS. The heavy snowfalls earlier this month have created roof problems for homeowners and business owners alike. Ice dams have formed, backing up water under roofing material and causing leaks. Last week, Larry Brandt, left, and Larry Brandt, Jr. were on the roof of their Guthrie Center business shoveling snow.

PARTY TIME. Students at the Panora-Linden elementary school in Linden Monday helped long-time secretary Alta Snyder celebrate her birthday. The party included a clown (Connie Lyons, Jefferson), balloon bouquet, cake and a skit featuring Kyle Hesseltine as the children’s favorite secretary.

GUY POWELL AWARD. At Thursday’s Midwest Partnership annual meeting at Lake Panorama, Dale Grotjohn of Panora, right, was named winner of the Guy Powell Award. It recognizes excellence in leadership and passion for economic development in Midwest Partnership’s 4-county region. Also pictured is Andy Randol, Panora Telco manager, who nominated Grotjohn. Active in a number of activities and organizations through the years, Grotjohn now serves on the TELCO and Lake Panorama RIZ boards.

TV AUDITION FOR YO-YO PHENOM. Fourteen-year-old Lucas Gremler will audition soon in Indianapolis, Indiana, for a chance to appear on “America’s Got Talent.” A producer for the show saw him on You-Tube and invited him to audition.

NEW CT SCANNER. Kevin Fister, radiology technologist at Guthrie County Hospital, introduces highly advanced X-ray technology now available at the hospital. The CT (computerized tomography) scanner takes four pictures in one-half of a second while greatly improving clarity and precision of information.

COMFORTS OF HOME. Even though temperatures in the Guthrie Center area have hovered near the zero mark the past two weeks, construction progress is being made at the new high school. Plastic huts that have been erected at the school site are heated by portable gas heaters that allow brick laying to continue despite the severe cold. Above is bricklayer James Wiemann of Audubon.
