The public is invited to help the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Guthrie Center celebrate its 100th anniversary on Saturday, Aug. 17 at the Guthrie County Fairgrounds Event Center.

A gospel music concert by Pride Family Music will be held beginning at 2 p.m. Former pastor Steven Shafer will speak, and visits to the church (1305 North St. in Guthrie Center) will be available.

Longtime church elder Doctor Steven Bascom and pastor Steven Goodenough are the current church leaders. Pastor Goodenough’s wife, Emily, provided history on the church’s century in the community.

The church formed in August of 2024, and in its early years, services were held at the home of Mrs. H.B. Shelley. In the 1940s and 1950s, services were held at the IOOF (Odd Fellows) hall, and later at city hall.

The current church building was dedicated in October of 1959. In 1999, the church celebrated 75 years.

In 2011, longtime leader Floyd Sherburne died at the age of 102. He was the builder of the Sherburne Cabin at Springbrook Park.

The church joined the Guthrie Center Association of Churches in 2013. In 2016, the church launched a Facebook page.

In January 2021, the church interior was redecorated and audio-visual upgrades were made. A new sign was installed in October 2023.
