By Rich Wicks | Times Vedette

On Feb. 14, Adair Police Chief Bradley Wendt was convicted on 11 of 15 charges in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa. The charges were originally filed on Dec. 14, 2022.

The charges stated, in part, “Since approximately July 2018, Wendt has exploited his position as the Adair Chief of Police to obtain and possess machine guns not lawfully available to the public… Wendt has done so by providing ‘law letters’ to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) in which Wendt falsely stated, among other things, that: (1) the machine gun(s) were being purchased for the official use of the Adair Police Department; or (2) the machine guns were being demonstrated to the Adair Police Department to evaluate them for potential future purchase by the Adair Police Department.”

By Rich Wicks | Times Vedette

Sheri Anthofer was recently hired as the community relations coordinator at Lakeside Village in Panora. She shared information on her experience, as well as how she views her role at Lake Village.

“I started Jan. 3 of this year,” said Anthofer. “I have a very diverse background. I’ve done hotel management, office administration, I was the director of The Gardens Assisted Living facility in Jefferson. I’ve done Human Resources up at Lake Okoboji for the Park Marina. I worked in the physical rehab department as their admin person for 15 years at Greene County Medical Center. I’ve also done event management. So, every job for me has really been a stepping stone, but the one thing that all of those jobs revolve around is people.”

Lakeside Village offers three basic type of care: independent living, assisted living and a memory care unit.

In Anthofer’s free time, she enjoys swimming, cycling and travel. She shared information about her family as well.

“My husband farms on the side, and he’s an electrician for Baker Electric out of Des Moines,” said Anthofer. “I’ve been married for 29 years and have three grown children.”

An open house at Lakeside Village is in the planning stage with a tentative date of Sunday, March 3. More details will be announced soon.

“I am really the sales and marketing coordinator,” said Anthofer. “My job is to fill those rooms, basically, making people aware of what we do out here.”

Guthrie County Supervisors seek to lower tax levy

By Rich Wicks | Times Vedette

On Feb. 15, the Guthrie County Board of Supervisors met for a budget work session.

Supervisors discussed ways to control/lower the tax levy rate to ease the burden on taxpayers throughout the county. The plan is to reduce it over the next four years.

Supervisor Mike Dickson shared his opinion that the county needs to do this gradually.

“If we go by the plan where we’re lowering it every year for the next four years, then we should keep enough fund balance in there that we can cover everything,” he said. “If we go too fast here, we could be hurting ourselves.”

Regarding the upcoming fiscal year budget, Dickson questioned the projected revenues in the Sheriff’s department. He said the revenue in that department through six months of the current year would not project to what is shown in the budget. The supervisors plan to visit again with department heads from which the supervisors need clarification about budgetary numbers.

Item No. 4 on the agenda was “Strategic Planning agreement with Region XII,” but the supervisors tabled that item.

The next meeting of the supervisors will be a regular meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 20. The public is welcome. Attendees may participate in person or by calling 323-792-6123 and inputting conference ID 547029216#.
