Tori’s Angels Foundation reaches milestone: 200 children sponsored in 15 years

Special to the Times Vedette

Tori’s Angels Foundation announces a significant milestone of having 200 children sponsored over the past 15 years, marking a journey of compassion, resilience and community support.

Since sponsoring its first child, Tori, in 2011, the foundation has expanded its reach to support hundreds of families facing life-threatening medical conditions. What began as a mission to help one child has grown into a network of care and generosity, impacting families across the entire state of Iowa in ways once unimaginable.

Tori’s Angels Foundation pays the medical expenses that insurance does not cover, such as co-pays, deductibles and approved pharmaceuticals. The Foundation also pays for the travel expenses necessary to obtain treatment so that the sick child can access available care for his or her condition, no matter where in the country that care is delivered. Tori’s Angels has also remained dedicated to offering emotional support and stability during some of life’s most challenging moments. The organization’s efforts have helped bring hope to families in crisis, delivered peace of mind when it was needed most and ensured that no family feels alone in their journey.

Tori’s Angels extends gratitude to all donors, volunteers and supporters who have made this achievement possible.

Peoples Bank’s Jayme Ungs recognized by Iowa Finance Authority

Special to the Times Vedette

Peoples Bank announced that Jayme Ungs, vice president and ag lender at Peoples Bank in Boone, has been named the Beginning Farmer Loan Program Lender of the Year by the Iowa Finance Authority (IFA) for the eighth time in his career. The award highlights the lender who assisted the greatest number of individuals through the program in 2025, helping new and aspiring farmers secure financing to start, grow and strengthen their agricultural operations. The honor was announced in celebration of National Ag Day, recognizing Ungs’ commitment to helping beginning farmers achieve success through IFA’s Beginning Farmer Loan Program.

IFA’s Beginning Farmer Loan Program provides reduced interest rate financing to help new farmers acquire farmland, buildings, machinery, equipment, and breeding livestock. The program is made possible through partnerships with participating lenders like Peoples Bank, using federal tax-exempt bonds issued by the Iowa Finance Authority.

Since its inception, IFA’s beginning farmer programs have helped more than 7,700 beginning farmers purchase nearly 500,000 acres across Iowa. In 2024 alone, IFA assisted 234 farmers in purchasing more than 32,000 acres through its Beginning Farmer programs.

“Jayme’s dedication to helping young farmers succeed truly embodies what Peoples Bank stands for,” said John Rigler III, president of Peoples Bank. “His passion for agriculture and his commitment to supporting the next generation of producers make a real difference in our communities. We’re incredibly proud of Jayme and grateful for the positive impact he continues to have on Iowa’s farming future.”

Age is just a number — one I can’t quite remember

I am not entirely sure how old I am. When someone asks, I have to stop and do the math — which assumes I know what year it is. That’s not a given. I have confidently given the wrong answer more than once, only to be corrected by my wife, my friends or, on one occasion, a cashier who seemed far too pleased to announce it.

It sounds ridiculous, but I know I’m not alone. If we’re being honest, some birthdays matter a lot, while others are about as meaningful as those college textbooks you refuse to throw away — just in case “Intro to Economics” makes a comeback.

Turning 13 was a big deal. You were officially a teenager. Did anything actually change? No. But it felt important, which is really what matters at 13.

At 14, things got serious. You could legally drive — with an adult in the car, of course, presumably to keep you from immediately steering into a cornfield. Still, that tiny taste of freedom was everything. You could also drive a moped, which felt incredibly cool at the time and incredibly not cool about two years later.

By 16, you had a real driver’s license and the ability to go places alone. Freedom. Independence. The open road. Today, I’m amazed at how many 16-year-olds aren’t in a hurry to get their license. I practically sprinted to mine. I begged a friend for a ride to another county just to take the test sooner. Now, between parents, ride-hailing apps and friends with cars, “I’ll just wait” has apparently become a strategy.

At 18, you could vote, get married or be drafted — all very adult activities I was in no rush to participate in. What I did understand was that getting into trouble suddenly came with adult consequences, which took some of the fun out of bad decisions.

Turning 21 and legally drinking wasn’t quite the cinematic moment I expected. No confetti. No parade. Just the realization that beverages are expensive. But 25? Now that was a milestone. My car insurance dropped, and I briefly considered celebrating by buying a sports car — until I learned the insurance would cost more than the car payment. Reality remains undefeated.

And that, I think, was the last truly exciting birthday. Now I’m somewhere in the neighborhood of 57, give or take a calculator check. The milestones are less about freedom and more about discounts. I find myself asking questions like, “Is this restaurant age-discriminating in my favor?” and “Do I qualify for that yet, or do I need to age another six months?”

In the meantime, I’ll keep doing the math every time someone asks my age. And with a little luck — and maybe a calculator — I might even get it right.

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thanks for reading.
