Iowans encouraged to report wild turkey sightings in July and August

From the Iowa Department of Natural Resources

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is looking for help with the annual wild turkey production survey.  During the months of July and August wild turkey sightings are recorded to estimate this year’s nesting rates and nest success.

Participation is easy. Just note the date and county in which the turkey was seen, if it was an adult female or adult male (males have beards on their breast) and if and how many poults (baby turkeys) were present. The survey is available online at www.iowadnr.gov/turkey, then click on Wild Turkey Survey. There is also an identification guide on documenting wild turkey broods on the survey webpage, that provides tips on how to determine males from females, and different flock scenarios with poults of different ages.

Annual population surveys conducted by the DNR are an important component of managing the wild turkey. Turkey populations can fluctuate annually across all regions of the state. All participation is appreciated.

Carico participates in Washington Leadership Conference

Special to the Times Vedette

Panorama FFA Member Ella Carico participated in the National FFA Washington Leadership Conference held in Washington, D.C., June 17-20. During the conference, Carico shared a room with three other members from different states. While at the conference Carico, along with 300 other FFA members from around the United States, attended leadership workshops. During the workshops, members sat at tables with complete strangers and were tasked with different group activities that got everyone out of their comfort zone. She talked, listened and learned during the workshops, and they helped her develop more communication skills and gain new confidence.

Other adventures that were shared in D.C. were exploring the city. All members had the chance to visit the national mall, visit the capitol, and had the choice of visiting the Museum of Natural History or the Museum of American History.

On the last day of the conference, there was a small group and large group reflection to review the conference and discover what had been learned.

Panorama FFA advisor participates in national training

Special to the Times Vedette

Panorama FFA Advisor Steven Hameister participated in the National FFA Washington Leadership Conference Advisor program held in Washington, D.C., June 17-20. The program was designed for advisors to learn from National FFA staff as well as other agricultural professionals in areas of agricultural advocacy, classroom management, advancing technology in the classroom and student leadership development.

Hameister attended various workshops over the course of the week and networked with other Agricultural Educators and FFA Advisors from across the country.

“This is the second time I have had the opportunity to participate in the Advisor program during the Washington Leadership Conference in D.C., and each time I’ve been able to gain new resources to help advance the Agriculture and FFA program here at Panorama,” Hameister said.

“The program is available to advisors who chaperone FFA members attending the WLC conference,” he said. “I was one of three advisors chaperoning the Iowa group this week. We bussed out 47 FFA members from across the state, including Panorama’s FFA President Ella Carico.”

In addition to workshops, advisors had some free time to explore the city with other advisors and help build relationships and learn more about programs from across the country.
