The 2025 Guthrie County Fair is just two months away, and that means the search for fair queen candidates is underway.

The following information is available on the fair’s website www.guthriecountyfair.com.

Applicants are encouraged to be involved in a community organization, such as 4-H, FFA, girl scouts, church group, etc. Applicants are not limited to 4-H and FFA membership.

The young lady chosen will not only represent Guthrie County at the Iowa State Fair Queen competition but will also be awarded a $300 scholarship from the Guthrie County Fair Board at the conclusion of her reign.

The competition is open to young ladies between the ages of 16 and not older than 21 years of age on Aug. 13, the first day of the 2026 Iowa State Fair. The candidate must reside within Guthrie County (or an adjoining county if the majority of her activities are within Guthrie County). Contestants must never have been married or have had children.

Complete rules and the application request form can be completed at www.guthriecountyfair.com. The deadline to request an application is July 5. Applications will be mailed to candidates after receiving their request and must be returned by July 15. An application received after July 15 will not be considered in the 2026 Guthrie County Fair Queen contest. A total of 12 players participated on June 13. Jane Barcus got a 16 and a 17,  Sandy Rumelhart got a 17, Robert Klever got a 16, and Rhonda Titus got a 16, 16 and 21.

The Guthrie Center cribbage players generally meet at Guthrie Center Library, 400 Grand St., on Mondays at 8 a.m. and at the New Homestead independent living dining hall, 2306 State St., at 8 a.m. on Wednesdays and at 1 p.m. on Fridays. Organizers say there is always room for more, and they will be glad to teach you how to play. They play for quarters on Wednesday and Friday.

Tatum Grubbs of Casey was named to the Wartburg College Winter/May Term Dean’s List. The college recognized 501 students for Winter/May Term. The list honors students who earned a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or above in at least five course credits during the terms. Four of the five course credits have to be graded with a traditional letter grade. Wartburg students take four courses during Winter Term, which runs from January through April, and one course during the one-month May Term.

Guthrie County Deputy Sheriff Taylor Wheatley reported car vs. deer collision occurring on June 11 at 9:28 p.m. on White Pole Road.  Shyann Rae Young, 18, of Adair, was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Impala LPT and struck a deer, causing an estimated $5,000 in damage to the vehicle.  The driver was not injured.

Guthrie County Deputy Sheriff Taylor Wheatley reported a single-vehicle accident occurring on June 14 at 8:52 a.m. on Frontier Road. Richard Alan Holbrook II, 34, of Yale, was driving a 2005 Subaru Legacy GT southbound in the 3200 block of Frontier Road in rural Guthrie County and lost control of the vehicle and collided with the ditch. He was transported by Adair EMS to the Guthrie County Hospital  and treated for injuries. Holbrook told the deputy he was on his cell phone texting and also admitted to drinking the night before.  Deputy Wheately executed a search warrant for the withdrawal of the driver’s blood for chemical testing.  Holbrook received citations for failure to maintain control and use electronic communication device – AG.  Estimated damage to the Subaru is $5,000.
