Cribbage results from June 6 and June 9

A total of 10 players participated on June 6. Dave Richter got a 16, Roy Carl got a 21, Lela Schwartz got a 16 and a 17, and Kay Phippen got a 16 and a 24.

A total of 12 players participated on June 9. Allen Pierce got a 16 and a 21.

The Guthrie Center cribbage players generally meet at Guthrie Center Library on Mondays at 8 a.m. and at the New Homestead independent living dining hall at 8 a.m. on Wednesdays and at 1 p.m. on Fridays. Organizers say there is always room for more, and they will be glad to teach you how to play. They play for quarters on Wednesday and Friday.

MJB Library provides offerings for June

The Mary J Barnett Library in Guthrie Center offers a variety of events for the community. Upcoming events include:

  • June 4-7 during library’s open hours, the Iowa PBS STEAM trailer will be on-site and full of STEAM/STEM activities.
  • Monday, June 9 at 4 p.m., Guthrie STEM Lab.
  • Wednesday, June 11 at 2 p.m., ISU Extension will host “Game of Best.”
  • Friday, June 13 at 1 p.m., Prehistoric Pep Rally.
  • Tuesday, June 17 at 1 p.m., Trick Bubble Show.
  • Wednesday, June 25 at 2 p.m., Tricky Towers. Participants will work in teams to build a tower using spaghetti and marshmallows.

Also, the summer reading program is ongoing. Many more events are scheduled throughout the summer. Contact the library for details on any offerings or special events.

Casey Library offers numerous summer events and activities

This summer, many events and offerings are available through the Casey Library. Currently, the Iowa Cubs Homerun Reading Challenge is ongoing. Readers who turn in a completed bookmark by July 8 will receive free tickets to the Iowa Cubs baseball game on Aug. 14.

  • Monday, June 16 at 5:30 p.m., Judi Zimmerline will lead adult crafts.
  • Monday, June 23 at 5:30 p.m., Cookbook Club will be held.
  • Every Monday, Kids Book Club happens at 4 p.m.
  • Wednesday, June 11 through Friday, June 13, library mini golf will be available.
  • Wednesday, June 18, “MineCraft” competition will be at 1 p.m.
  • Wednesday, June 15, Judi Zimmerline will lead a birdhouse making craft at 1 p.m.
  • Friday, June 20, “MineCraft” movie will be shown at 1 p.m.
  • Saturday, June 21, toddler storytime will be at 10 a.m.

PANORAMIC VIEW. Kim Lamberti of Ankeny and Gertrude Finnegan of rural Panora found the best way to enjoy the beauty of Lake Panorama and the countryside is a hot air balloon ride. Ralph Stonehocker of Ankeny piloted the balloon Memorial Day, lifting off from the Lake Panorama marina and landing at the Guthrie Center airport.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU RUN OUT OF DIAPERS? Ruth Owen and 6-month-old Jennifer were special guests at a babysitting shortcourse sponsored by the county extension service. Ten-year-old Laura Shackelford, Bayard, practices diapering Jennifer at the first session of the shortcourse attended by about 25 girls. The course, taught by Sharon Bieschke from the Des Moines extension office, continues next Wednesday.

Main Street Dance Studios recital held

This past weekend, Main Street Dance Studios, owned by Kristi Vance, held its 33rd annual recital for students who attend their Panora and Stuart locations. The dancers come from Adair, Casey, Guthrie Center, Panora, Stuart, Yale and other nearby communities, along with a few from the Nevada studio that study at multiple locations each week.

The recital was held at Panorama High School, and the theme this year was “Once Upon a Dream.” There were many dance routines of that theme, along with a few mini-productions (“Tangled” and “Sleeping Beauty”) and competition dance routines. Three-and-a-half-hour-long recital shows were held on Friday evening, Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, along with a two-hour Competition Revue show on Saturday afternoon.

Graduating seniors included Emily Partlow, Elizabeth Snyder, Madelyn Carstens, Madison Edgington, and Emmarae Ellis.

Guthrie Center Fire Department grills

On June 4, the Guthrie Center Volunteer Fire Department hosted its annual grill-out event. For a freewill donation, attendees were treated to a meal of a burger or hot dog, chips, cookies and drink. The event raised money for a required upgrade of breathing apparatus equipment.

Many hands make light work at the serving line.
