ITC Midwest to conduct aerial patrols of transmission lines

ITC Midwest will be conducting aerial patrols of high-voltage transmission structures and lines throughout its service territory from approximately Sept. 8 to Oct. 2, weather permitting. Helicopter patrols provide an overall status of the overhead transmission system owned and operated by ITC Midwest.

These patrols are a North American Electrical Reliability Corporation (NERC) requirement for ITC Midwest’s vegetation management program, support proactive maintenance objectives and align with the company’s model for operational excellence. The flights will include the inspection of vegetation in the vicinity of transmission structures, wood poles, conductors (wires), insulators and other equipment.

The inspection flights are often conducted at low altitudes to facilitate accurate visual inspection of vegetation hazards. This is normal procedure, so there is no cause for alarm if a low-flying helicopter is sighted near transmission lines during the time frame listed above.

The flights will take place across the following areas of the ITC Midwest service territory:

Flights will be conducted in the following Iowa counties: Adair, Allamakee, Appanoose, Benton, Black Hawk, Boone, Bremer, Buchanan, Cass, Cedar, Cerro Gordo, Chickasaw, Clayton, Clinton, Dallas, Davis, Delaware, Des Moines, Dickinson, Dubuque, Fayette, Franklin, Greene, Grundy, Guthrie, Hancock, Hardin, Henry, Howard, Iowa, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson, Johnson, Jones, Kossuth, Lee, Linn, Lucas, Mahaska, Marshall, Mitchell, Monroe, Osceola, Polk, Poweshiek, Story, Tama, Wapello, Winnebago, Winneshiek and Worth.

Communities in the aerial patrol areas include Ames, Ankeny, Asbury, Beacon, Boone, Burlington, Cedar Rapids, Chariton, Clinton, DeWitt, Dysart, Dubuque, Eddyville, Fort Madison, Gladbrook, Iowa City, Iowa Falls, Independence, Keokuk, Lansing, Marengo, Marion, Marshalltown, Mason City, Newton, North Liberty, Palo, Perry, Ottumwa, Vinton and Williamsburg.

The dress-up days are as follows:

Friday, Sept. 11: Parade will start uptown at the square at 2:15 p.m., ending at the football field with a pep rally at 3 p.m. Coronation will be during halftime of the varsity football game Friday versus Earlham.

Saturday, Sept. 12: The Homecoming dance will be 8-11 p.m. Doors will open at 8 p.m. and close at 9 p.m. There is no re-entry for students. Out-of-town guests are to be registered with the office by Thursday, Sept. 10.

On Aug. 29, a total of 15 players participated. Rhonda Titus got three 16s; Darwin Hughes and Kathy Feilmeier each got a 17; Sandy Rumelhart, Dick Ellis and Roy Carl each got a 16; Robert Klever got three 16s and a 17; Dick Ellis got a 22; and Allen Pierce got a 24.

On Aug. 31, a total of 11 players participated. Dennis Betts, Bill Sheeder and Dan Webb each got a 16; Kathy Feilmeier and Dave Kading each got a 17; and Robert Klever got a 22.

The Guthrie Center cribbage players generally meet at Guthrie Center Library, 400 Grand St., on Mondays at 8 a.m. and at the New Homestead independent living dining hall, 2306 State St., at 8 a.m. on Wednesdays and at 1 p.m. on Fridays. Organizers say there is always room for more, and they will be glad to teach you how to play. They play for quarters on Wednesday and Friday.

Tori’s Angels holds open house and ribbon cutting

Tori’s Angels opened a downtown office in Panora at 110 East Main St. and celebrated Friday, Aug. 28 with an open house and official ribbon cutting. The office space is shared with BH Real Estate and Consulting.

Refreshments and light hors d’oeuvres were served, and attendees were able to learn more about the organization.

Tori’s Angels began in 2010 with fundraisers to support the medical needs of a local girl, Tori Heckman. When there were leftover funds, the organization was formed to help other youth.

Tori’s Angels Administrative Assistant Ellen Betzer described how the organization functions and what type of situation qualifies.

“The child has to have a life-threatening illness, and they have to live here in the state of Iowa, and they have to have some type of medical insurance,” Betzer said. She added that once approved, Tori’s Angels can support the need until the child turns 19 years old.

“We can cover anything that’s not covered by insurance, that’s medically necessary for that life-threatening illness. So if there are doctor’s appointments that have a co-pay, or deductibles, things like that,” Betzer said. “We also cover the travel expenses and meals.”

Betzer shared a few numbers to provide scope on what Tori’s Angels has done.

“We recently approved our 208^th child, and we currently have 147 that we’re actively supporting,” she said. We’ve paid out over $3 million in benefits to the families we’ve covered in the 16 years.”
