Panorama prepares for 1A District 4 tournament on Saturday

The Panorama boys wrestling team will compete at the IHSAA 1A District 4 tournament on Saturday, Feb. 15 at Interstate 35 High School. Panorama will compete against Earlham, Logan-Magnolia, Interstate 35, AHSTW, Central Decatur, Woodbine, Martensdale-St Marys, Southeast Warren and Wayne. The champion and runner-up from each weight class will advance to the state tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines Feb. 19-22.

February is National Library Lovers’ Month, and MJB Library is giving you plenty of reasons to love our library. Last Saturday, Guthrie Center Friends of the Library hosted their annual Trivia Night competition. Team Buzz Kill edged out Team Rolling with Mahomies (clearly, it was a rough weekend for all associated with Mahomes).  

Youth Programming

The Guthrie County ISU Extension will be presenting an after school STEM program on Thursday, Feb. 13 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for elementary age youth. Preschool story hour continues each Friday, beginning at 10 a.m.  

Adult Activities

Card making club will meet from 9-11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20. All supplies are provided for the $5 fee. Cookbook club will be sampling recipes from Stephen Colbert and Evie McGee Colbert’s cookbook “Does This Taste Funny?”Individuals who would like to attend are encouraged to stop by the library to choose a recipe to share at the meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20. 

The Evening Book Club got off to a great start with 17 in attendance. The group has chosen the name Reads Well With Others for their book club moniker. The next meeting will be Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 5 p.m. Stop by the library to check out a copy of “Part of Your World” by Abby Jimenez, which is our book to discuss.

Ruby I. Krakau

1932-2025

Ruby Iola Krakau, 92, of Guthrie Center, daughter of Albert and Florence (Nelson) Clausen, was born May 8, 1932, in Cass County. She passed away Saturday, Feb. 8, 2025, at the New Homestead in Guthrie Center.

Ruby graduated from Exira High School in 1950. On Oct. 22, 1950, she was united in marriage to Floyd Mervin Krakau in Brayton. To this union, five children were born. Ruby and Floyd spent almost 73 loving years together. They made their home in Grand Junction until moving to Guthrie Center in 1959. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Guthrie Center and the Iowa District West Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML).

Ruby was a busy and social homemaker and an excellent cook and baker for her family and friends. A few favorites were her cranberry pudding cake, Danish coffee cake, and, of course, her secret lemonade recipe. She was an active community member, volunteering with the Guthrie County Hospital Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels and Guthrie Center Women’s Club. Her hobbies included porcelain classes, playing cards and bowling league. She enjoyed the annual Exira Fourth of July celebration, the Guthrie County Fair, especially the bingo stand, and always attended the Iowa State Fair on opening day. Most of all, Ruby loved spending time with and spoiling her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Ruby is survived by her children, Merv (Barb) Krakau of Guthrie Center; Teresa (Doug) Kent of Guthrie Center; Tamela (Jeff) Booth of Guthrie Center; Bill (Mary) Krakau of Roland; and Tonya (Brad) Messner of Springfield, Missouri; 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Floyd; brother, Robert, and his wife, Leona; sisters, Marjorie, and her husband, Orville Krakau, Harriet, and her husband, Henry Alff, and twin sister, Ruth, and her husband, Jack Large.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, Feb. 14, 2025, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Guthrie Center. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Guthrie Center. Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025, from 5-7 p.m. at the Twigg Funeral Home in Panora.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Immanuel Lutheran Church’s LWML, Guthrie Center.

Guthrie Center City Council addresses speed concerns

At the Feb. 10 meeting of the Guthrie Center City Council, traffic speed was the main topic. The council held the first reading of the proposed Ordinance 2025-02, “Amend Chapter 63, Subsection 63.04- Adjust speed limits on School Street and Bluff Street…” The ordinance would decrease the speed limit on each street from 35 mph to 25 mph. The council unanimously approved the first reading.

The council discussed installing digital speed signage on three spots for traffic entering Guthrie Center (North Highway 25, South Highway 25 and West Highway 44).

City Clerk Kris Arrasmith explained the signage is available free of charge to the city, with the possible exception that the city may have to pay for the sign post. The council consensus was to install the three signs where allowed by the state DOT.

Guthrie County Sheriff Matt Harmann was present and addressed the council regarding coverage and services provided by his department. He discussed the contracted amount of coverage for the city and stressed that the number of hours may fluctuate some from week to week.

“You’ll see some weeks are more than required. Maybe take that into account if we get a busy time. Like right now, we’ve been dealing with a lot of car break-ins around the county,” Harmann said.

The council went into closed session to discuss a possible litigation matter regarding goats.

The next regular meeting of the council is set for Monday, Feb. 24 at 6:30 p.m. The public is welcome.
