Cribbage results from Jan. 30 and Feb. 2

On Jan. 30, Sandy Rumelhart and Dennis Betts each got a 16; Wayne Nickel got a 20; and Robert Klever got a 16, 16 and 20.

On Feb. 2, a total of six players participated. Sandy Rumelhart and Robert Klever each got a 16; Wayne Nickel had the best luck with a 17, 17 and 20.

The Guthrie Center cribbage players generally meet at Guthrie Center Library, 400 Grand St., on Mondays at 8 a.m. and at the New Homestead independent living dining hall, 2306 State St., at 8 a.m. on Wednesdays and at 1 p.m. on Fridays. Organizers say there is always room for more, and they will be glad to teach you how to play. They play for quarters on Wednesday and Friday.

Isuzu rolls on White Pole Road

Guthrie County Deputy Sheriff Kent Gries reported a single-vehicle accident occurring on Jan. 27 at 2:10 p.m. on White Pole Road. Denon Joseph Doherty, 20, of Casey was driving a 2005 Isuzu Ascender eastbound in the 3100 block of White Pole Road and left the roadway into the south ditch, ramped the interstate railroad tracks, went airborne, landed and rolled an unknown number of times. Doherty and a passenger suffered unknown but suspected serious injuries and were transported by Adair County EMS to Mercy Main Hospital in Des Moines. Estimated damage to the Isuzu is $8,000.

GMC strikes deer on Wagon Road

Guthrie County Deputy Sheriff Josh Armstrong reported a vehicle vs. deer accident occurring on Jan 30 at 7:02 p.m. on Wagon Road. Dawn Marie Shepherd, 53, of Creston was driving a 2020 GMC Terrain SLT southbound on Wagon Road and struck a deer crossing the roadway in the 2700 block. Estimated damage to the GMC is $1,501.

At the annual Guthrie County Cattlemen’s banquet on Jan. 31 at the Guthrie County Fairgrounds, the 2026 Beef Queen and Beef Princess were crowned. Candidates included Maci Bauer, Rylee Robson and Nora Langgaard. Robson was crowned queen, and Langgaard was named princess. As usual, a large crowd of beef producers and interested persons were on hand.

Bereavement Support in Guthrie Center Feb. 3

On the first Tuesday of each month, from 1-2 p.m., the public is invited to The New Homestead Assisted Living (2306 State St., Guthrie Center) for support and fellowship following the loss of a loved one. LBSW Bereavement Coordinator Carla Kem will facilitate, along with Brandy Clark of The New Homestead.

Souper Bowl with no loser

Through Feb. 11, Guthrie County State Bank (GCSB) is sponsoring a Souper Bowl event. Everyone is asked to consider donating cans of soup at either GCSB location (Panora or Guthrie Center) or at Hometown Foods (Panora or Guthrie Center). GCSB will then match all donations with everything going to help New Opportunities feed those in need.

Bingo Feb. 5, 19 and 26

The Guthrie County Hospital Foundation and Auxiliary will host bingo on three Thursday evenings in February. The events will be held at the Guthrie Center Activity Center (209 State St.) on Feb. 5, 19 and 26. Each evening, a freewill donation meal will be served 4:45-6 p.m., with bingo from 6-8 p.m.

Freewill Dinner To-Go Feb. 7

First Christian Church Women’s Fellowship will host a freewill donation meal on Saturday, Feb. 7 from 5-7 p.m. at 105 North 4th St. in Guthrie Center. The meals are to-go only (no dine-in), and will include alfredo, breadsticks and salad. For large orders, please call 641-332-2571.

Casey Library event Feb. 7

“Take your child to the library day” will be held 9-11:30 a.m. at the Casey Public Library (604 McPherson St.). Enjoy refreshments, pick out a free book, listen to a story, and sign up to win $25 in Casey Bucks.

Chili Cookoff and Bingo in Casey Feb. 8

This event was originally set for Jan. 24 but was postponed due to extreme cold weather. The Casey Service Club is holding a chili cookoff and bingo event. Chili entries can be brought to the Casey Community Center from noon to 1 p.m. with a freewill dinner beginning at 1 p.m. Entries will be awarded in four categories (spiciest, most unique, best overall, and people’s choice). Bingo begins at 2 p.m. 

Pancakes in Yale Feb. 8

The Yale Fire Department’s annual pancake breakfast will be 7 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Feb. 8 at the Yale Community Building. For a freewill donation, come enjoy pancakes, eggs, sausage, and biscuits and gravy.

Dueling Pianos in Adair Feb. 13

On Friday, Feb. 13, the Adair Chamber of Commerce will host the event to raise funds for Chuckwagon Days. The event will run from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Community Center (308 Stuart St.) in Adair. Cost is $40 pre-sale and $50 at the door. Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be available. BYOB, and a limited amount of free beer will be available.

An Evening Out Feb. 13

The Guthrie County Arts Council will host its 10th annual “An Evening Out” event on Friday, Feb. 13. Tickets are $40 each and can be purchased at Art on State in Guthrie Center. Only 100 tickets will be sold. The evening will begin with wine and chocolate tasting at Art on State, 5-6 p.m., followed by dinner at the Guthrie Center Activity Center (209 State St.) at 6:15 p.m. A raffle and entertainment by Dale Menning and the Stardusters will follow 7-9 p.m. Attendees are welcome to bring their own beverages or purchase wine at Art on State.

Galentine’s Day in Panora Feb. 14

B & B Marketplace in Panora (106 East Main St.) will host a pampering event on Feb. 14. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Rae Lane Permanent Jewelry and Brie Beardsley (The Renew Room) will offer chair massages. Enjoy complimentary champagne while your tensions melt away.

Bingo in Guthrie Center

American Legion Auxiliary 124 will hold Saturday night bingo at the Guthrie Center Activity Center (209 State St.) on Feb. 28 and March 28. A freewill donation dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. with bingo starting at 7 p.m.

Plan ahead for Stem Fest

Guthrie County Extension and Outreach will hold Stem Fest 2026 on Saturday, March 28 from 9 a.m. to noon at Panorama Elementary School (401 Panther Drive). The event is targeted to kids in kindergarten through sixth grade.

Handbags and Bingo April 10

The Guthrie County Hospital Foundation’s annual “Handbags and Bingo” event will be held on Friday, April 10 at the Fairgrounds Event Center. Social hour will begin at 4:45 p.m., with dinner at 5:45 p.m., followed by bingo and games. Tickets can be purchased from the hospital’s website.
