Shaffer and Draper to compete at state meet this week

The Panorama boys track and field team are sending two athletes to the state meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. Syler Shaffer qualified for the 400-meter hurdles, and Reed Draper qualified for the long jump, setting a school record in the process. The events will be available to watch for free on the IHSAA’s website HERE.

Bireline-Huss competes at state qualifier on Monday

ACGC boys golf was able to send one golfer to the 1A state-qualifying meet hosted by St. Edmund on Monday, May 18. Sayer Bireline-Huss, who has put together a solid sophomore season for the Chargers, placed 20th, shooting an 85. Gladbrook-Reinbeck and Coon Rapids-Bayard tied for first, shooting a 315. Don Bosco’s Blake Irvin and Earlham’s Will Harris and Blaine Vanderheiden tied for the medalist spot, shooting 74.

Charger girls 4×200-meter and Petersen to compete at state meet

The ACGC girls track and field team qualified for two events at the IGHSAU state track and field meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines from Thursday, May 21 to Saturday, May 23. The girls 4×200-meter relay team of Meranda Gruber, Savannah Akers, Cadence Petersen and Nora Langgaard qualified for state while setting the school record in the event at 1:50.34. Petersen qualified for the 400-meter hurdles. The events will be available to watch for free on the IHSAA’s website HERE.

The ACGC boys track and field team will take on the best teams in 1A after winning its state-qualifying meet. The state track meet is at Drake Stadium in Des Moines from Thursday, May 21 to Saturday, May 23. The events will be available to watch for free on the IHSAA’s website HERE. 

Here is the schedule of events for the ACGC boys: 

Thursday, May 21

  • Jack Sheeder, shot put, 11:30 a.m.
  • Ryan Martens, long jump, 11:30 a.m.
  • Preston Kent, 3,200-meter run, 10:10 a.m.
  • Thomas Skram, Morgun Nolte, Collin Stringham, Brexton Schneider, shuttle hurdle relay, 2:05 p.m.

Friday, May 22

  • Schneider, 110-meter hurdles, 10:40 a.m.
  • Joe Crawford, Schneider, Skram, Talon Noland, 4×100-meter relay, 12:55 p.m.

Stuart farmers market starts May 20

The first farmers market of the season kicks off May 20 in Stuart. The event will be 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the city park.

 

Memorial Day ceremony in Guthrie Center

Guthrie Center American Legion Post 124 will hold a Memorial Day program outside the Guthrie County Courthouse on Monday, May 25 beginning at 10 a.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair.

Plan ahead for citywide garage sales

Panora citywide garage sales are set for June 12-13. Guthrie Center’s citywide garage sales will be June 19-20 with citywide cleanup to follow on June 24.

Foraging workshop May 20

Join Anne Riordan on a hike at Springbrook State Park at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20, to collect wild edibles, followed by a hands-on session to prepare them. Fee is $20 per person. Register at the Facebook page of Guthrie County ISU Extension and Outreach.

Hunter Education Field Day May 28

On May 28, a Hunter Education Field Day class will be offered from 5-8 p.m. at Panorama High School. Those signing up for the Field Day must have first completed the entire online Hunter Education course and must bring a printed course completion certificate. Books and Bikes at Guthrie Center Library this summer

The Guthrie Center Library has partnered with the Masonic Lodge (Orange Lodge No. 123) to promote academic success and fun. Kids ranging from pre-kindergarten through sixth grade are invited to read their way to chances for a new bike. The reading program will run June 1 through July 31. To register, see the library’s website or call 641-747-8110. Each book read equals a chance to be drawn as the winner of a new bike. The winner will be announced in early August.

WSO Home Tour features lake locations

The Women’s Service Organization (WSO) 2026 fundraising home tour is Friday, June 5. Five Lake Panorama homes will be featured, with three on the west side of the lake and two on the east side. Tickets are $30 and include the tour and lunch at The Captain’s Pick at Lake Panorama National Resort, 5071 Clover Ridge Road. Tickets will be available beginning May 1 and can be reserved by calling or texting Toni Wright at 641-757-0886 or Sue Merryman at 641-751-5956. There will be a maximum of 260 tickets available, which organizers expect to sell out quickly.

Heroes and Hot Dogs June 20 in Guthrie Center

The Guthrie Center Fire Department will host an event called “Heroes and Hot Dogs” from 3-7 p.m. on Saturday, June 20 at Mitchell Park. There will be hot dogs and refreshments, bounce houses, demonstrations by members of the fire department, and the opportunity for youngsters to meet local firefighters. To help raise funds for the fire department, sponsorships for the event are still available. If interested, contact any member of the fire crew.

Mullenium Charity Golf Tourney June 22 in Panora

The Lake Panorama National Golf Course will be the setting for the Mullenium tournament, with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. Cost is $150 for a single; $600 for a foursome. Dinner is included. Heckling by comedians, a ball launcher and a drone drop will be involved. Proceeds support My Happy Place (“Creating joyful spaces for the wellbeing of those with a serious health diagnosis”). Midwest Partnership golf outing June 26

Save the date of Friday, June 26 for the 31st annual Midwest Partnership golf outing. The event will be held at the Lake Panorama National course. More details and registration information will be shared in the coming weeks.

Golf tourney for Guthrie Center Library June 27

The fourth annual Friends of the Guthrie Center Public Library golf tournament will be held on Saturday, June 27 at the Guthrie Center Golf Course (2604 State St.). Registration will begin at 8 a.m. and a shotgun start will kick off the tourney at 9 a.m. The tourney is a four-person scramble format. Cost is $60 per person, which include cart and lunch.
