Klinge is low scratch winner with a 32

On Aug. 11, a total of 43 women participated in the Panorama West Women’s Golf League. 

In the A Group, Kathy Klinge was the low scratch winner with a 32. The second low scratch winners were Emily Spradling and Sharon Wedemeyer with a 33. The HDCP winner was Kathy Klinge with a 32. The special event was most putts, and Audrey Sunner was the winner with 24. Emily Spradling and Sharon Wedemeyer had the fewest putts with 14.

In the B Group, the low scratch winners were Ann Chambers and Lori Hammer with a 39. The second low scratch winner was Donna Brody with a 41. The HDCP winners were Donna Brody and Lori Hammer with a 24. The special event was most putts, and Cheryl Howard was the winner with 24. Donna Brody had the fewest putts with 17.

Sharon Wedemeyer, Angie Worth and Lori Hammer each had one birdie. Karen Bump and Sharon Wedemeyer each had one chip-in. There were 39 pars.

Thanks to research by Quinn Douglass, a local radio broadcaster for KQWC Radio and friend of mine, I now have access to historical football records for all of the teams within the West Central Activities Conference. Check it out HERE. Not only are the records for all of these programs here (dating back to 1992), but there is statistical data for nearly every single Iowa high school.

Let’s start with the ones you are likely the most interested in: Panorama and ACGC. Panorama’s all-time record since 1992 is 162-153. Their best season came in 2011 with a 10-1 record, district championship and playoff qualifier. As this column goes out, I’ll be interviewing Jim Demers, the new head football coach for the Panthers who will look to steer the ship back in the right direction after back-to-back 1-7 seasons.

ACGC, as most of you know, only became a school in 2016. The football program went winless in its inaugural season. Since then, the tide has very much turned for the Chargers. As of now, ACGC’s all-time record is 60-39 with three straight 10-1 seasons. Those campaigns were led by Cody Matthewson, who has since left for Van Meter. I interviewed new head coach, Will Shull, who has been an assistant under Matthewson recently. He hopes to continue the success the program has been having in recent years.

Before there was ACGC, there was Adair-Casey and Guthrie Center. Guthrie Center’s all-time record sits at 138-96. The best season was a 13-0 state championship winning campaign in 1996. Adair-Casey nearly has the best all-time win-loss ratio of any team in the conference with their record of 179-72. That includes back-to-back state championships in 2000 and 2001. Their 10-0 state-title-winning team is arguable their best. In terms of wins, AC was 12-1 in 2013 but did not win the big one.

Outside of those hometown team’s, this document is still fantastic. I looked up my alma mater, Des Moines Lincoln, as well. The school’s all-time record is 131-177. Not great, I know.

Two more fun tabs to look at are the 70% wins tab and the all-time wins leaders tab. With the requirements of playing at least 300 games and being active in 2025, West Lyon leads all high schools with an 84.51 winning percentage at a record of 333-61. I can’t even get those type of records on video games.

Naturally, West Lyon tops the chart for the most wins as well. Maybe I should make the trek out there and see one of their games. Or just wait for the state tournament and see them there, since it seems like an inevitability. Rounding out the top five for most wins is Harlan Community, 329 wins; Solon, 327 wins; Valley, West Des Moines, 321 wins; and Dowling Catholic, 320 wins.

Dog Day at the pool

Friday, Aug. 14 is the final day of the season at the Guthrie Center Aquatic Center. That evening, from 6-9 p.m., dogs will be allowed in the pool. Dogs must have all vaccinations current, and must be on a leash when not in the pool.

Fall foraging Aug. 19 at Springbrook

Springbrook State Park, 2437 160th Road, Guthrie Center, will be the site of a late summer/early fall foraging event. Everyone is welcome to join naturalist Anne Riordan on a hike to gather wild edibles in the park and then learn how to prepare them. The event begins at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 19. Free community meal at Faith Bible Church Aug. 19

Everyone is invited to come enjoy a free meal at Faith Bible Church (2096 Highway 4, Panora) on Wednesday, Aug. 19. Serving will be from 5:30-6:30 p.m. The meal will include tater tot casserole, green beans, cottage cheese and cookies.

Arts Council Scholarship Fundraiser Aug. 20

The Guthrie County Arts Council will hold a fundraiser event from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Aug. 20 at Art on State (320 State St., Guthrie Center). For a freewill donation, attendees can enjoy homemade treats, pie, dessert bread and water or coffee.

Flannel Crawl in Guthrie Center Aug. 22

A full day of food, fun and shopping awaits on Saturday, Aug. 22 in downtown Guthrie Center. For $50 per person, attendees will enjoy meditation at Sapphire Skin, breakfast at the Café, shopping at local stores and the farmers market, lunch, and drinks at Incredi-Bowl. Little Chargers Grill-out Aug. 24

The public is invited to support the Little Chargers Early Learning Center by enjoying a meal of burgers, chips and dessert on Monday, Aug. 24 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. (or until sold out). The meal is available for a freewill donation. Little Chargers is at 207 Park Ave. in Guthrie Center.

 

High Five Fridays at GC Elementary

Free grief support group in Panora this fall

Beginning Sept. 8 and running through Dec. 8, a free grief support group will meet at the Panora Public Library (102 North First St.) on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. To register, go to www.griefshare.org or call Carla Kem at 641-332-3006.

Blues and BBQ Aug. 29 at Boulder Beach

On Saturday, Aug. 29, from 4-7 p.m., great music and food will be on tap at Lake Panorama’s Boulder Beach. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair to listen to live music by the Brick’N Bob Duo. Tickets cost $40 each and can be purchased from any LPA or LPN member, or by emailing Shanell.wagler@gmail.com. Proceeds will support improvements at Lake Panorama National.

Guthrie County Fair Sept. 3-7

The 2026 Guthrie County Fair will be held Sept. 3-7 at the Guthrie County Fairgrounds in Guthrie Center. The Guthrie County Fair has been an established venue since 1858. Located on the west edge of Guthrie Center, the fairground is centrally located in the county. The fair is held annually over Labor Day weekend, providing a long weekend of fun and family-oriented events. See details at www.guthriecountyfair.com.

Guthrie County Fair 5K Sept. 5

Runners and walkers are encouraged to join the Guthrie County Fair 5K on Saturday, Sept 5 at the fairgrounds. The course is flat and fun. Registration will open that day at 7:30 a.m., with the 5K to begin at 8 a.m. Participants can register online now through Sept. 2. Cost is $30 (or 15 without a t-shirt). Proceeds will support the ACGC cross country teams.

BBQ Cook-off in Stuart Sept. 18-19

Fun and food will be enjoyed at the Best of the Block BBQ Cook-off in downtown Stuart on Sept. 18 and 19. The fest kicks off on Friday, Sept. 18 with a freewill donation chili feed at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19 offers a Legion breakfast, games and kids’ events, caricatures, a vendor fair, BBQ awards, pie auction and raffle, BBQ meat fest and street dance with live music. The complete schedule can be viewed on the Facebook page of Stuart Best of the Block BBQ. The event will raise funds for the Cottage Pantry and the American Legion.

Sunshine Club meets Aug. 12

On Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026, seven Sunshine Club members met at the home of Chari Heldenbrand for an 11 a.m. meeting and luncheon. Sandy called the meeting to order with the roll call being, “What is the furthest you have travelled from your home?” Lots of interesting answers were given along with why members were there.

The minutes of the July meeting were read, and the treasurer’s report was given.

Charlotte will not be able to have the September meeting, so Sandy suggested several small day trips the group could take; it was decided to take a trip to Manning to visit the 17th Century German Hausbarn, which was built in 1660 in Germany, later dismantled, shipped and reconstructed at the Manning Heritage Park. The trip will be on Sept. 29 and the group will later decide the time and where to meet for rides.

The meeting adjourned with lunch to follow, and several members brought appetizers, desserts, veggies, fruit bowls and muffins to accompany the meal. Some stayed to play cards to complete the afternoon.

Panorama honored as FAFSA Focused School

During the Aug. 10 meeting of the Panorama School Board, it was announced that Panorama has been recognized as a FAFSA Focused School of Excellence for meeting or exceeding a 70% FAFSA completion rate. The Iowa Department of Education announced 74 Iowa schools are being recognized for their outstanding commitment to student completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) during the 2025-26 school year.

Awardees for the 2025-26 school year receive department support and resources to ensure students are prepared for success in transitioning to post-secondary education. The FAFSA helps determine students’ eligibility for scholarships, grants, work study and student loans and is also used by many post-secondary institutions to determine financial need. FAFSA completion is a core component of the program, helping students to finance post-secondary education and remove financial barriers to education and training beyond high school.

In a press release, The Iowa Department of Education shared more details.

“The FAFSA is the first step to accessing federal, state and institutional financial aid, which is vital for students who are pursuing their post-secondary educational dreams,” Christina Sibaouih, chief of the Department’s Bureau of Postsecondary Community Engagement, said. “It is wonderful to see the growing number of Iowa schools that are prioritizing FAFSA completion with their students to help open doors and postsecondary pathways to future success. Congratulations to our 74 schools that are being honored as FAFSA Focused Awardees.”

The Department awarded the FAFSA Focused School of Excellence award to 28 Iowa schools for meeting or exceeding a 70% FAFSA completion rate. Additionally, 46 Iowa schools received the Focused School of Achievement award for meeting or exceeding their FAFSA completion goal. Panorama achieved a 73% FAFSA completion rate, compared to the statewide average of 54.2%.

Upcoming dates noted included Aug. 19 (MS/HS Open House 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.), Aug. 19 (Sixth Grade Orientation at 6 p.m. in auditorium) and Aug. 24 (first day of school, 8 a.m. start time).

The board approved the Dance Team fundraiser (ISU concessions at football and volleyball, August/September/October 2026).

The board reviewed and unanimously approved the following district goals:

  • District Culture — Successfully transition to and execute a four-day instructional week model by establishing transparent communication channels, optimizing instructional time, and ensuring smooth operational workflows that support staff, students and district families.
  • District Operations — Optimize district facilities and physical environments by executing upgrades to support a safe, welcoming and high-functioning learning environment.
  • Academic Excellence — Expand hands-on life skills development and personal growth opportunities to ensure all students are equipped with essential social, emotional, leadership and practical life skills.

The board approved replacement of a heat pump by purchasing a Daikin 3.5-ton water source heat pump. With labor and materials, the expected cost will be $11,920.

The board reviewed policies as part of the annual policy review and also held first and second readings on lists of policy updates.

The next regularly scheduled board meeting is set for Monday, Sept. 14 at 5:30 p.m. The public is welcome.
