Klemish leads North American Lions Leadership Conference

Ardie Klemish from Anita, a member of the Adair Lions Club since 1999, was appointed by the Lions Clubs International President to serve as the Chairman of the 2026 USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum in Memphis, Tennessee, in September.

Nearly 2,000 Lions from the USA, Canada and 16 visiting countries will attend more than 90 educational seminars in three days, along with four general sessions where keynote speakers will inspire Lions. Ardie chairs a team of 24 planning committee members. They began coordinating the 50th anniversary of the leadership conference a year ago.

Ken Klemish, a 40-year Lion in the Adair Lions Club, is transportation chair for the 2026 event. Their teams are responsible for all seminars, facilitators and moderators, registration at 14 hotels, the audio visual needs in the convention center, the meals in the ballroom, entertainment, keynote speakers and the bus transportation. A host committee in Memphis assists the planning committee with volunteers to help in all the venues.

Ardie and Ken have attended 24 USA/Canada Leadership Forums in the USA and Canada. Ardie has served 10 years, and Ken has served five years on either the planning or host committees for the USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum, helping to develop the Lion leaders of the future.

“My name is Bette Reese. I have lived in Panora since 1994. I have been a graphic designer and commercial embroiderer here all that time. More than 20 years ago, I was commissioned by the Panora Chamber to design welcome signs for our city. Ken Turner was in charge, and I gave my design to a sign company in Des Moines who put it together. I used my 386 computer and Corel Draw! to create it. There was another gentleman who contributed the sailboat design, which I turned into a vector file for the sign. I wish I could remember his name. I was so glad to see that all three signs were still in great shape for their age. I was sad to hear my longstanding signs were being replaced, but time moves on and tastes change.” – Bette Reese

On Aug. 18, a total of 10 players participated. Dick Ellis got a 16; Robert Klever got a 17 and a 22; Dan Webb got a 17; Wayne Nickel got a 21; Sandy Rumelhart got a 16, 20 and 23; and Rhonda Titus got a 23.

The Guthrie Center cribbage players generally meet at Guthrie Center Library, 400 Grand St., on Mondays at 8 a.m. and at the New Homestead independent living dining hall, 2306 State St., at 8 a.m. on Wednesdays and at 1 p.m. on Fridays. Organizers say there is always room for more, and they will be glad to teach you how to play. They play for quarters on Wednesday and Friday.

Koeningsberg is low scratch winner with a 31

On Aug. 18, a total of 50 women participated in the Panorama West Women’s Golf League.

In the A Group, Kelli Koeningsberg was the low scratch winner with a 31. The second low scratch winner was Carol VanKirk with a 33. The HDCP winners were Kathy Delucca and Carol VanKirk with a 24. The special event was longest putt on No. 9, and Karen Eby was the winner. Ai Dunlop, Karen Eby and Susan Thompson had the fewest putts with 15.

In the B Group, Jane Harris and Beth Muenzenberger were the low scratch winners with a 38. The second low scratch winner was Amy Lawton with a 39. The HDCP winner was Jane Harris with a 23. The special event was longest putt on No. 9, and Sue Hendricks was the winner. Donna Brody, Beth Muenzenberger and Nini VonBon had the fewest putts with 18.

Ai Dunlop, Susan Thompson and Beth Muenzenberger each had one birdie. Ai Dunlop, Susan Thompson, Sharon Wedemeyer, Kathy Feilmeyer and Sue Hendricks each had one chip-in. There were 46 pars.

Panorama West Tuesday night men’s league shoot out results

On Aug. 18 at the Panorama West Golf Course and Clubhouse, 34 golfers participated in the Tuesday Night League Shoot Out.

In the A Flight, Ryan Smith placed first. Jeff Muench placed second, followed by Bill Pierce in third.

In the B Flight, Dave Breitbach placed first. Time Ganske placed second, followed by Ted Ericson in third.

In the C Flight, Cliff Wendel placed first, followed by Dan Hagen in second, and Jim Bane in third place.

Finally, in the D Flight, Bill Eby placed first, followed by Jason Wolf in second, and Doug Hemphill in third.

Aug. 25 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. will be the Panorama West Tuesday Evening Men’s League Final, followed by an awards banquet.
