The ACGC boys and girls cross country teams competed on their home course in the 1A state-qualifying meet on Thursday, Oct. 23. While neither of the teams qualified for the state championship as a whole, each squad will be sending an individual. Preston Kent represents the boys, and Cadence Petersen represents the girls.

“They both ran their best races of the season by far with Preston setting a new personal best time and Cadence running her best time in two years. I couldn’t be more proud of these two for all of their work this season and the way they ran last night. Their success is very well deserved,” Head Coach Rick Blake said.

Blake added praise for his entire team on an overall successful season.

“The rest of the squads ran excellent races as well, and I am so happy with the way the kids performed. Every runner last night improved their time from last week’s conference race on the same course. Kennedy Reinhart and Chelsea Kopaska both ran personal best times on the hardest course on our schedule. They had fantastic races. Lillie Lauzon ran one of her best races of the last two years,” Blake said. “The freshman boys ended their great seasons on a high note, running their best course time of the season. Their future seems bright. Our entire core of boys behind Preston ran well together, and competed, and I just believe good things are in store for both boys and girls teams in the future.”

In the boys race, Kent finished in seventh place with a time of 16:48.01. Haven Weers of Tri-Center Neola placed first in 16:11.74. Riverside Oakland won the meet outright with 29 points. In the girls race, Petersen placed seventh with a time of 21:03.90. Lili Denton of St. Albert Council Bluffs won the race, finishing in 17:36.60. Newell-Fonda won the meet with 42 points.

The state meet takes place at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. The 1A girls race begins on Nov. 1 at 2 p.m., and the boys 1A race begins at 2:45 p.m. on the same day.
