Casey steaks hit the spot

On Saturday, Sept. 26, an enticing scent of grilling brought many to the Casey Community Building as members of the Casey Fire Department held their steak fry and raffle fundraiser. Available meals included steak or grilled hot dogs with sides. Most of the members of the fire crew, along with friends and family, helped make the event run smoothly.

Many raffle prizes waited to be won.

Top prize in the raffle was a 65-inch TV.

Local authors share at Jamaica Library

Former lawman Robert Hurley tells a funny story of a motorist he pulled over.

On Sept. 25 at the Jamaica Public Library, seven local authors each shared excerpts from their books. A total of approximately 25 people attended. The authors and their books included Susan Smith (“Susan’s Kitchen”), Janice Harbaugh (“A Strange Occurrence at Thyme Creek”), Robert Hurley (“10-31 Crime in Progress”), Pamela Fritz Davis (“Where Shadows Meet Sunlight”), Susan Wilcox Richardson (“Uncommon Bonds”), Judy Lindgren Johnson (“Crazy Jake’s Treasure”), and Zaven Boswell (“Fester”).

Most of the books mentioned above are available for checkout from the Jamaica library or can be purchased through Amazon or other retailers.

Great weather for harvest

Recent weather has been ideal for harvesting crops in the area with dry conditions and light breezes. Motorists are reminded to be alert for clouds of dust caused by farm machinery and to drive defensively as farm vehicles work to feed the world.

Dodge truck hits deer on Talon Avenue

Guthrie County Deputy Sheriff Jason Gray reported a vehicle vs. deer accident occurring on Sept. 26 at 6:52 a.m. on Talon Avenue. Jamie Lynn Long, 37, of Menlo, was driving a 2019 Dodge 1500 Laramie truck and collided with a deer, causing an estimated $2,000 in damage.

Guthrie County Deputy Sheriff Kent Gries reported a multiple-vehicle accident occurring on Sept. 26 at 6:10 p.m. on Second Street in Menlo. Leonard Henry Sudbrock, 74, of Menlo was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Traverse LTZ  westbound on Second Street and collided with a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado pickup that was legally parked, causing an estimated $1,500 in cosmetic damage to both vehicles. 

Autumn meals and events in the area

This time of year, there are many seasonal events happening (pumpkin patches, church suppers, hayrides, etc.). Below are some upcoming events in or near Guthrie County.

Bob Dylan Tribute in Greenfield Oct. 3

Chrome Horse, the Bob Dylan Tribute, will play at the Warren Cultural Center (154 Public Square, in Greenfield) at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3. Tickets are $25 each.

Adair Boys & Girls Club meal delivery Oct. 3

Anyone in the Adair/Casey area is invited to support the Adair Boys & Girls Club of Central Southwest Iowa by ordering Friday harvest lunchtime meals. The Oct. 3 meal will be scalloped potatoes and ham.

In Adair, deliveries are available at 11:00, 11:30, noon or 12:30. 

In Casey, meals can be picked up at 11:30 or 12:30 at the Casey Community Center.

Cost is $12 per meal, and each meal includes a side, cookie or bar, and water. To order meals for pickup or delivery, call 641-742-3119 by the Wednesday beforehand.

The menu for upcoming Fridays is: Oct. 10 – brisket mac & cheese; Oct. 17 – chicken bacon ranch tater tot casserole; Oct. 24 – chicken and noodles.

GCH Health Fair and 5K Oct. 4

Guthrie County Hospital (710 N. 12th St., Guthrie Center) will hold a 5K run/walk at 10:30 a.m., followed by a health fair and free lunch, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 4.

Adair Brisket Dinner Oct. 4

Adair Fire and Rescue will hold a brisket dinner on Saturday, Oct. 4, 5-8 p.m. at the fire hall (505 Fifth St., Adair). Tickets are $13 each. A raffle will also be held.

Twin Vines Fall Festival Oct. 4

Twin Vines (2821 Highway 44, Panora) will host a fall festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4. Zipp’s Pizzaria food truck will be on hand, along with live music. Approximately 20 vendors are expected.

St. Cecelia’s Chicken Dinner Oct. 5

St. Cecelia’s Church (220 N. First St. in Panora) is holding a chicken dinner on Sunday, Oct. 5, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Admission price for adults is $15, kids $10, and kids younger than 6 eat free.

First Christian Church Harvest Dinner Oct. 5

Sunday, Oct. 5, First Christian Church (105 North 4th St., Guthrie Center) will hold a harvest dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The meal includes beef and noodles or chicken and noodles, corn or green beans, salads and desserts. A freewill offering of $10 per meal is recommended. There will also be a gluten-free meal option.

Cruise and Shop Oct. 10-12

The first annual Cruise and Shop Tour will be held Oct. 10-12 along White Pole Road. It will include approximately 40 possible stops along 26 miles of the scenic byway with discounts offered at all participating stores, restaurants and bars. The route runs through Dexter, Stuart, Menlo, Casey and Adair. A $26 discount card to unlock special discounts all weekend long at participating businesses can be purchased at whitepoleroadcruiseandshop.eventbrite.com. Haunted Village Oct. 12

The Guthrie County Historic Village will host its annual Haunted Village event from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 206 W. South St. in Panora. The free event includes candy, games, fortunes, tattoos, crafts, storytelling, the haunted museum, hayrides, and the movie “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!” with free popcorn. Costumes are encouraged.

Bagley Chicken Noodle Dinner Oct. 13

Bagley United Methodist Church (401 Main St., Bagley) will host a chicken noodle dinner on Monday, Oct. 13 from 5-7 p.m. The meal includes chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans, cole slaw and bars. Freewill donation accepted. Carry-out or dine-in.
