The ACGC boys basketball team (0-2) lost its home game to Woodward-Granger (2-1) on Friday, Dec. 5. It was an up-and-down game for ACGC. The Chargers ended the first quarter down 11 but came back to head into half-time up, 27-26. Unfortunately, ACGC could not hang on to the lead. Thomas Skram starred on offense with a game-high 29 points. Skram also led the team in rebounds with six and assists with four. Also reaching double-figure scoring were Joe Crawford with 12 and Reece Emgarten with 11. Crawford had active hands on defense with a team-high four steals.

ACGC looks to stop its early season skid at Van Meter (1-0), tonight, Tuesday, Dec. 9. ACGC secured a win over Van Meter last season (68-57) for the first time since 2013.

The No. 8 ACGC girls basketball team (3-0) continued its undefeated start to the season over Woodward-Granger (2-2) at home on Friday, Dec. 5. Olivia Mahaffey led the game in scoring with 22 points on an efficient 7/8 from the field and 8/10 from the free throw line. Mahaffey also led the team in rebounds with eight. Joining her in double figure scoring were Camdyn Richter with 14 and Stella Largent with 11. Richter stuffed the stat sheet with eight rebounds, three assists and a team-high four steals. Karli Kautzky led the team in assists with five.

ACGC is back in action tonight, Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Van Meter (2-0). ACGC won the last time these teams competed, 50-42 in December last season.

ACGC’s Cody Matthewson announced an unofficial announcement on social media that he is stepping down as ACGC’s head track and field coach. This was made in the wake of his accepting the 9-12 principal position at the high school last fall.

Matthewson spent seven years in charge of the black and gold runners. The team experienced a great deal of success during his tenure. His accomplishments include:

• Three-time state qualifying meet championship: 2023, 2024 and 2025
• State runner-up: 2025
• Three top-10 placements at state championships: second place in 2025, seventh place in 2024 and fifth place in 2023
• Indoor IATC State Champions: 2025
• WCAC Champions: 2022 and 2025
• Four state champions
• 48 state qualifiers
• 22 state medalists (top eight finishes)
• Two state meet records

Matthewson said the job is considered open and can be applied for. Whoever replaces the successful coach has big shoes to fill, but Matthewson has left the program in a good spot to succeed.

The ACGC boys basketball team (1-0) got off on the wrong foot at home against West Central Valley (1-0) on Tuesday, Dec. 2. Joe Crawford led the Chargers in scoring with 23 points. Thomas Skram joined him in double figures with 14. Freshman Reece Emgarten led the team with six rebounds. Crawford, along with Preston Kent, led the team in assists with three each. Crawford also led the team in steals (two) and blocks (two).

ACGC aims to get to an even record against Woodward-Granger (1-0) at home on Friday, Dec. 5.

The Panorama girls wrestling team will do battle at the Woodward-Granger Girls Wrestling Invite tonight, Friday, Dec. 5. Other teams at the meet will be Albia, Ballard, Boone, Earlham, Osage, Panorama, Southeast Warren, Southwest Valley and Woodward-Granger.

The Panorama boys wrestling team hosted a quadrangular meet against Coon Rapids-Bayard, Manson NW-Webster and Southeast Valley on Thursday, Dec. 4. Panorama would lose two of the duals, one to CR-B, 53-24, and one to Manson NW-Webster, 51-27. The Panthers picked up a win against SV, 42-34.

The Panthers have a quick turnaround and will wrestling again tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 6 at Harlan for the Dan Hill Invitational. Other teams at the competition will be Audubon, Denison-Schleswig, East Union, Glenwood, Harlan Community, Lenox, Logan-Magnolia, Panorama, West Central Valley, Westwood and Winterset.
