During the Sept. 15 meeting of the Guthrie County Board of Supervisors, County Engineer Josh Sebern reported on high water in the county due to recent rains.
“The southern third of the county is pretty wet. There’s pretty good flooding we haven’t seen for a number of years. I’ve seen worse; I’ve seen better,” Sebern said. “I don’t see this being a FEMA event by any means yet.”
Guthrie County Public Health Director Jotham Arber discussed the plans for establishing a multiple-county district lead for public health. The plan is for Guthrie County to ask to be considered, and letters of support are being sought. Arber added that Pottawattamie County is also likely interested in being a candidate for the district lead, and that Guthrie County would work cooperatively within the district regardless of which county becomes the lead.
“We are the most regionalized district in the state,” Arber said.
Conservation Director Brad Halterman announced that the lower section of Nations Bridge Park has been closed off temporarily due to excessive rain in September. He said that portion will be reopened when appropriate.
Halterman also noted that the county’s parks will have water turned off with a tentative date of Oct. 15. He added that the actual date is contingent on the weather, so if a cold snap hits earlier, the water may be shut off sooner. He noted that the parks can still be used after the water is shut off, but the bathrooms will be locked.
