The Chargers placed second as a team at the IHSAA 1A district 9 meet at Riverside Oakland on Saturday and qualified six individual wrestlers for the state tournament — Tegan Slaybaugh at 120, Gavin Sloss at 126, Ryder Cline at 144, Michael Fuller at 190, Carter Richter at 215 and Payton Jacobe at 285. The state wrestling tournament begins Wednesday, Feb. 14 and will conclude on Saturday, Feb. 17 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Slaybaugh (120) took first place after winning a decision against Kellen Oliver of Riverside Oakland. Sloss (126) defeated Johnny Cortez of Coon Rapids-Bayard before falling in the championship match to place second. Cline (144) won against Ethan Bauer of Coon Rapids-Bayard before losing a decision against Jaxon Gordon of Riverside Oakland, finishing second in his weight class. Fuller (190) took second place after beating Nate Jorgensen of AHSTW but fell in the championship round against Tate Haffner. Richter (215) finished in second place after defeating Caden Forristall of Riverside Oakland. Jacobe (285) placed first after beating RJ Dishong in the championship match.

The following matchups will take place tomorrow, Feb. 14. Slaybaugh is the No. 4 seed at 120 and will receive a first-round bye before facing the winner between Sam Egan of Sumner-Fredericksburg and Aden Rieb of Alta/Aurelia. At 126, Sloss is the No. 23 seed and will hit the mat against Brock Morris of Cascade. Cline is the No. 21 seed at 144 and will match up against Lucas Bose of Underwood. Fuller finds himself as the No. 20 seed at 190 and takes on Hayden Huen of Underwood. Richter is locked in as the No. 23 seed at 215. He will face Grant Henderson of Sumner-Fredericksburg. Jacobe is the No. 7 seed at 285 and will receive a bye, where he will face the winner of Joel Cooper of Panorama and Antoni Solovi of Postville. . ACGC wrestlers who placed at the district meet but are not advancing to the state tournament include Finn Billheimer (106, 4th place), Chase Slaybaugh, (113, 4th place), Charlie Christensen, (132, 3rd place), Tate Fever, (138, 4thplace) Taytum Bates, (150, 4th place), and Jackson Pfrang, (165, 4th place). If a first- or second-place finisher cannot advance or compete in the state tournament, the third-place finisher from that district will advance to state competition. If a district champion is unable to compete in the state tournament, the runner-up from that district will take the champion’s place on the state tournament bracket and the 3rd-place wrestler from that district will take the runner-up place on the bracket. If a runner-up is unable to compete, the 3rd-place wrestler from that district will take the runner-up’s place on the bracket.
