THE NEW KING. GCHS senior Kyle Cheney authored two new school records this week. “It was exciting,” said Cheney, who broke a 37-year-old mark in the shot put Monday and a nine-year-old record in the discus Tuesday. Cheney threw 50’0″ to place third at the Class 1A state meet last spring. So how did he add nearly 4.5 feet this spring? “No technique change. I’m just stronger and quicker,” he stated. Cheney said after throwing 53’9″ Monday, he thought he had a shot at the shot put record, which he bettered on his next throw. Coach Steve Brand noted the lefty increased by 5 feet in each of his first three years.
