More than just books

February is National Library Lovers’ Month, and we at Mary J. Barnett Library are working hard to give you a reason to celebrate. A huge cause for celebration is that we have had another young patron who finished 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten. Blair reached her goal of reading 1,000 books before starting school.

Another reason to love the library is the after-school programs available to our elementary-age patrons. The Guthrie County/ISU Extension office presented a STEM workshop on Feb. 13. The topic of the activities was color connections. 

Upcoming events

Cribbage Players meet weekly at the MJB Library. They play each Monday morning from 9-11 a.m. On Wednesday mornings, Bridge Club meets from 9-11 a.m. each week. New players are encouraged and welcome to join the fun. 

Card-making club meets monthly to work on hand-crafted greeting cards. Led by Judi Zimmerline, this creative group works on the third Thursday of each month. Feb. 20, from 9-11 a.m. will be the next class. All materials are provided for a $5 fee. 

Cookbook club will be meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20. “Does This Taste Funny?” by Stephen Colbert and Evie McGee Colbert will be the source for February’s recipes. Anyone who would like to participate should stop by the library to select a recipe from the book to make for the meeting. 

MJB Library is excited to have two book clubs. Reads Well With Others evening book club will be meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 5 p.m. to discuss “Part of Your World” by Abby Jimenez. After a wild bet, a gourmet grilled-cheese sandwich and a cuddle with a baby goat, Alexis Montgomery has had her world turned upside down. The cause: Daniel Grant, a ridiculously attractive carpenter who is 10 years younger than her and as casual as they come — the complete opposite of sophisticated city-girl Alexis. And, yet, their chemistry is undeniable. This fast-paced romantic comedy will keep readers entertained. Copies are still available for checkout for anyone who would like to join.   

Between the Covers book club which meets at 3 p.m. will be reading “The Secret Book of Flora Lea” by Patti Callahan Henri. This historical fiction novel centers around Hazel and her sister, Flora. When Hazel stumbles across a mysterious children’s book, long-held secrets about her missing sister Flora and their childhood spent in the English countryside during WWII are revealed. 

Preschoolers and their caregivers are invited to join us for Story Hour at the MJB Library each Friday morning beginning at 10 a.m. Parents and caregivers of preschool-age children are also reminded to sign up for the free program 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, intended to help children with reading readiness by reading 1,000 books before they start school. 

The MJB Library gives a big shout-out to Blair for reading 1,000 books before kindergarten. She is showing off her new T-shirt and one of her favorite books.

1933-2025

William Richard Jordan, Sr., 91, son of Samuel and Frances (Lacy) Jordan, was born July 15, 1933, in Ross. He passed away on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025, at his home.

Bill enlisted into the United States Navy, serving from 1951 to 1954 during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, Bill worked several jobs including boiler technician, tractor sales, garage maintenance, and was a truck driver for many years, working for Crouse Cartage for more than 20 years and even obtained his GED in 1982. On June 25, 1966, he was united in marriage to Linda Sue Lynam in Omaha, Nebraska. They made their home in Audubon, Carroll, Kansas City, Chicago, North Carolina, Kansas and, for the last 10 years, in Panora.

He was a member of the Guthrie Center United Methodist Church, Life member of the American Legion, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for more than 55 years.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Jordan of Panora; daughters, Debi May (Steve) Barrington of Florida and Donna Trask of Tennessee; sons, William “Bill” Jordan, Jr. of California; Randolph Jordan of Arizona; and Scott Jordan of Panora; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; sister, Lee (Verdon) Sorensen of Shenandoah; and brother, Franklin (Pat) Jordan of California; along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Andrew Barrington; sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Jim Young; two nephews, Mike and Jeff; father-in-law, Dale Lynam; mother-in-law, Betty Lynam; brother-in-law, Carl Kepple; and sister-in-law, Pam Lynam.

Cremation has taken place, and memorial services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 22, 2025, at the Guthrie Center United Methodist Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in the Brethren Cemetery, Panora, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.

Sex abuse investigation and arrest made

The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office was notified on Feb. 11 by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office about an active sex abuse investigation and authorities believe the crime occurred in Guthrie County.

It was alleged that on Feb. 3, a 14-year-old female ran away from home in Des Moines and was approached by an unknown adult male near QuikTrip. The male offered to buy the female alcohol and drive around, to which the female agreed to.

The female became intoxicated throughout the night and eventually lost consciousness.

When the female awoke, she was in the male’s residence where the two had sexual intercourse.

The next morning, the male dropped off the female at or near her high school, and the female reported the incident to local law enforcement.

Due to the help of license plate readers and security footage, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office was able to identify a vehicle and suspect of interest.

 The 14-year-old female positively identified the suspect as being Max Pierce, 39, of Panora. She also identified his vehicle.

The female explained Pierce’s residence in detail and shared her observations.

The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at Pierce’s residence on Feb. 12 at 12:20 p.m. Evidence was seized pursuant to the search warrant.

Pierce was present and interviewed. He admitted to having sex with the female and taking her to school the next morning.

Pierce was arrested for sex abuse third degree and transported to the Guthrie County Jail. Additional charges are pending.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
