No. 4 Chargers clear first playoff hurdle beating Exira-EHK, 78-45, face Audubon in quarterfinals

The No. 4 ACGC boys basketball team (20-2) won its 1A-8 substate game against Exira-EHK at home on Monday, Feb. 17. ACGC went into half up 36-14, then exploded for 30 points in the third quarter to widen the gap. The Chargers host Audubon (11-11) on Thursday, Feb. 20, in the 1A-8 substate quarterfinals. Audubon defeated Glidden-Ralston in the second round, 59-47. ACGC and Audubon have not played each other since 2012. ACGC won that game, 63-47. Audubon’s leading scorer is junior Brody Schultes at 11.3 points per game. Jathan South has led ACGC in scoring all season and is averaging 19 points per game. Payton Policky is averaging 13.8 rebounds and will do battle on the boards with Austin Christensen, who is averaging 9.4 rebounds per game.

6 ACGC wrestlers qualify for state tournament, tying school record

ACGC ties the school record for state qualifiers with six: Gavin Sloss (126), Ryder Cline (144), Angel Martinez (165), Jackson Pfrang (175), Carter Richter (190) and Jack Sheeder (285).

The ACGC boys wrestling team competed at the IHSAA 1A District 9 tournament at South Hamilton on Saturday, Feb. 15. Six Charger wrestlers qualified for the state tournament by placing first or second in their respective weight classes. For the second year in a row, ACGC ties the school record for state qualifiers with six: Gavin Sloss (126), Ryder Cline (144), Angel Martinez (165), Jackson Pfrang (175), Carter Richter (190) and Jack Sheeder (285). Three wrestlers did so by becoming district champions. Cline, by defeating Aiden Hellman of Don Bosco. Pfrang, by defeating Cooper Nattress of South Central Calhoun. Sheeder, by defeating Jace Pedersen of South Central Calhoun. Gavin Sloss won the second-place match over Drayke Dvorak of North Tama. Sloss hit 150 career wins at the tournament. Angel Martinez won the second-place match over Hayden Stickrod of South Central Calhoun. Carter Richter won the second-place match over Mason Anderson of Manson Northwest Webster. The 1A first round begins on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 1:30 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The tournament will go through Saturday, Feb. 22. Panorama dominates first round game vs. Ogden, 62-32

Panorama girls basketball (12-10) won its 2A Region 3 first round playoff game at home against Ogden (1-22) on Saturday, Feb. 15. Panorama held Ogden to 0 points in the first quarter. Morgan Crees led the team in scoring with 17 points, steals with seven and assists with four. Nerea Gimeno Perez with 13 points and Lydia Lleshi with 11 points joined her in double figures. Ruth Fett led in rebounds with 10.

Panthers falter in first round vs. Southeast Valley, 88-39

Panorama boys basketball (3-19) lost its 2A – 8 first round matchup on Monday, Feb. 17 at Southeast Valley High School (12-10). The Panther season ended there while Southeast Valley travels to face OABCIG (16-4) on Feb. 20.

Five Panorama wrestlers punched their tickets to the state tournament at the meet: Landon Kirtley (138), Will Knapp (150), Gabe Wagner (157), Blake Schwartz (165) and Joel Cooper (285).

Five wrestlers punched their tickets to the state tournament at the meet: Landon Kirtley (138), Will Knapp (150), Gabe Wagner (157), Blake Schwartz (165) and Joel Cooper (285). To qualify for the 1A state championship tournament, wrestlers needed to place first or second in their weight class. Kirtley won the second-place match over Kacyn Watson of Central Decatur. Knapp initially lost in the quarterfinals to Austin Henderson of Wayne, Corydon. Knapp battled his way back through the consolation bracket to face Henderson again in the third-place match, where he would win. Then, in the second-place match, he defeated Brenner Sullivan of Woodbine. Wagner won the second-place match against Mavrick Hutton of Interstate 35. Blake Schwartz won his second-place match against Connor Murdock of Woodbine. Joel Cooper punched his ticket by defeating Keegan Long of Earlham in the second-place match. The 1A first round begins on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 1:30 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The tournament will go through Saturday, Feb. 22.
