PANORAMIC VIEW. Kim Lamberti of Ankeny and Gertrude Finnegan of rural Panora found the best way to enjoy the beauty of Lake Panorama and the countryside is a hot air balloon ride. Ralph Stonehocker of Ankeny piloted the balloon Memorial Day, lifting off from the Lake Panorama marina and landing at the Guthrie Center airport.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU RUN OUT OF DIAPERS? Ruth Owen and 6-month-old Jennifer were special guests at a babysitting shortcourse sponsored by the county extension service. Ten-year-old Laura Shackelford, Bayard, practices diapering Jennifer at the first session of the shortcourse attended by about 25 girls. The course, taught by Sharon Bieschke from the Des Moines extension office, continues next Wednesday.

Main Street Dance Studios recital held

This past weekend, Main Street Dance Studios, owned by Kristi Vance, held its 33rd annual recital for students who attend their Panora and Stuart locations. The dancers come from Adair, Casey, Guthrie Center, Panora, Stuart, Yale and other nearby communities, along with a few from the Nevada studio that study at multiple locations each week.

The recital was held at Panorama High School, and the theme this year was “Once Upon a Dream.” There were many dance routines of that theme, along with a few mini-productions (“Tangled” and “Sleeping Beauty”) and competition dance routines. Three-and-a-half-hour-long recital shows were held on Friday evening, Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, along with a two-hour Competition Revue show on Saturday afternoon.

Graduating seniors included Emily Partlow, Elizabeth Snyder, Madelyn Carstens, Madison Edgington, and Emmarae Ellis.

Charles Joseph ‘Joe’ Bohlender 

1937-2025

Charles Joseph “Joe” Bohlender, 88, of Olathe, Kansas, passed away at the Village of Olathe in Olathe. He was born April 3, 1937, in Guthrie Center, the son of Harold Ormal and Thelma Louise (Lundstrom) Bohlender.

Joe proudly served in the United States Air Force for more than 20 years, retiring in 1976. He earned the rank of Tech Sergeant and served during the Vietnam War. After retirement, Joe worked for PRC Kentron, Inc., a contractor with the USAF.

On Sept. 8, 1963, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Joe was united in marriage to Karen Lee Oyler. They shared more than 61 years of marriage. To this union, they shared two sons, Bryon and Charles Joseph “Joey” Bohlender, Jr.

Joe was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Holton, Kansas.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a son, Charles Joseph, “Joey” Bohlender, Jr.; and a sister, Betty Billick.

Survivors include his wife, Karen, of the home; a son, Bryon Bohlender of Glenwood Springs, Colorado; a daughter-in-law, Linda Tochtrop of Linwood, Kansas; a sister, Linda Wolfe (Mike) of Norwalk; two brothers, James Bohlender (Lynda) of Guthrie Center and Jack Bohlender (Susan) of Norwalk; eight grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Memorial Services were held 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at the First United Methodist Church in Holton, Kansas. Graveside Inurnment with Military Honors followed at 1:30 p.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery in Topeka, Kansas. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church c/o Mercer Funeral Home, P.O. Guthrie Center Fire Department grills

On June 4, the Guthrie Center Volunteer Fire Department hosted its annual grill-out event. For a freewill donation, attendees were treated to a meal of a burger or hot dog, chips, cookies and drink. The event raised money for a required upgrade of breathing apparatus equipment.

GCH Specialty Clinic announces transition to new cardiology partner

GCH Specialty Clinic announces a switch in cardiology providers as part of an effort to enhance patient care and expand its range of services. As part of the transition, the clinic will partner with The Iowa Clinic.

“We are thrilled to be joining forces with The Iowa Clinic,” Tina Nourse, Chief Clinic Administrator at Guthrie County Hospital, said. “Our primary goal is always to ensure our patients receive the best possible care, and this new partnership will provide them with access to some of the most advanced cardiology services available.”

GCH Specialty Clinic remains dedicated to offering specialized care across a range of medical disciplines. By partnering with The Iowa Clinic, the clinic aims to further elevate its service offerings and continue to improve the health and well-being of its patients.
