Panorama Women’s Golf League: Koeningsberg is low scratch winner with 31

A total of 61 women played in the Panorama Women’s Golf League on July 1.  

In the A group, Kelli Koeningsberg was the low scratch winner with a 31. The second low scratch winners were Ai Dunlap and Carla Fitzgerald with a 33. Kelli Koeningsberg was the HDCP winner with a 21. The special event was most 4s, and Emily Spradling was the winner with nine. Carla Fitzgerald and Linda Wendl had the fewest putts with 14.

In the B group, Carrie Hansen was the low scratch winner with a 34. The second low scratch winner was Lori VanKirk with a 40. The HDCP winner was Carrie Hansen with a 14. The special event was most 4s, and Carrie Hansen was the winner with seven. Carrie Hansen, Sue Hendricks and Lori VanKirk had the fewest putts with 16.

Karen Eby and Kelli Koeningsberg each had a birdie, and Lori Hammer had a chip-in.

Panorama Men’s Golf League: Crawmer has low score of 28

On Tuesday, July 1, a total of 33 men played league at Panorama West Golf Course. Trent Crawmer had a low score of 28 and made the longest putt. John Muenzenberger was closest to the pin. Jay Ganske needed only 14 putts. The scramble was won by the team of Curt Anderson, Dean Tanner and Bruce Bailey with a score of 2 under par 25.

Ten Squared Women of Guthrie County donates $14,700 to Friends of Jamaica Library

The Ten Squared Women of Guthrie County group presented its second quarterly donation of 2025, giving $14,700 to Friends of the Jamaica Library. This amount includes member donations and several employer matches.

The Jamaica Public Library, founded in 1948, holds a special place in the county — not only as a public library for the community of Jamaica but also as the longtime home of the Guthrie County Genealogical Society. For more than 40 years, the society has helped countless individuals across the county and the country trace their family histories.

The Friends of the Jamaica Public Library was officially established in the summer of 2024 and is now recognized as a 501(c)(3) organization. A recent membership drive brought more than 50 members into the Friends organization. The group is led by a five-member board, working closely with Library Director Laurie Carnahan and the library board. 

“The library board, Library Director Laurie Carnahan, and the Friends of the Jamaica Library are beyond excited and thankful,” Friends board member Carla Hilgenberg said. “With this wonderful gift, we’ll be able to help the library upgrade its technology and increase programs and services.”

As part of its support, the Friends group will provide prizes and snacks for the Library’s summer reading program. The group will also sponsor a special event featuring Fonziba Drums on Thursday, July 31 at 5 p.m. at the Jamaica Community Center. All are welcome to this free, interactive program, which will give attendees the opportunity to learn and play Djembe drums.

Iowans encouraged to report wild turkey sightings in July and August

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is looking for help with the annual wild turkey production survey.  During the months of July and August wild turkey sightings are recorded to estimate this year’s nesting rates and nest success.

Participation is easy. Just note the date and county in which the turkey was seen, if it was an adult female or adult male (males have beards on their breast) and if and how many poults (baby turkeys) were present. The survey is available online at www.iowadnr.gov/turkey, then click on Wild Turkey Survey. There is also an identification guide on documenting wild turkey broods on the survey webpage, that provides tips on how to determine males from females, and different flock scenarios with poults of different ages.

Annual population surveys conducted by the DNR are an important component of managing the wild turkey. Turkey populations can fluctuate annually across all regions of the state. All participation is appreciated.
