David Dean Shroyer, age 67, of Guthrie Center, passed away on Dec. 23, 2025, in Largo, Florida. David was born on May 3, 1958, in Guthrie Center, to Ruth (Derry) and Tom Shroyer. Dave drove a truck for many years, owned and operated the family farm, and worked for Guthrie County Roads as a maintainer operator before going on to become the owner of M&L Service and an ice cream shop with his wife, Tami. He was known for his no-nonsense advice and for always looking out for the community’s best interest rather than profit.

David shared 50 years of marriage with his high school sweetheart, Tami (Bowman). He was a loving father to Denise Reno (Mark) and Chris Shroyer (Lexie), as well as a father figure to Mikel Wierick. He was also a proud grandfather to Seth Reno (Sarah), Dustion Bush (Keisha), Makenna Wierick (James) and Austin Wierick (Abby).

He is survived by his stepmother, Peg Shroyer of Panora; siblings Dennis Shroyer (Paula) of Panora and Diane Andresen (Virgil) of Guthrie Center; brother-in-law Dale Bowman (Pam) of Martinsburg, Iowa, James Bowman of Prudenville, Michigan; sister-in-law Cheri Bowman of Ayrshire, Iowa; stepbrothers Dan VanWinkle (Deb) of Panora and Don VanWinkle (Dawn) of Panora; along with extended family, nieces, nephews, and many friends who will miss him dearly.

David had a special fondness for tractors — especially red ones — and found joy in the simple things that reflected his hardworking spirit. He will be remembered for his loyalty to family, his strong work ethic, and his quiet passions that brought him happiness.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Ed Middleton; and his brother-in-law, Dana Bowman.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Jan. 17 at 1 p.m. Family and friends are invited to gather and remember David, sharing stories and honoring a life well lived.

American Legion Chicken Dinner Jan. 18

The Guthrie Center American Legion (Post 124) will hold a fried chicken dinner on Sunday, Jan. 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Legion Hall, 507 State St.  

Community Free Meal in Panora Jan. 21

Faith Bible Church (2096 Highway 4, Panora) welcomes everyone to enjoy a free meal on Wednesday, Jan. 21 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. The meal includes pulled pork on a bun, coleslaw, corn, macaroni casserole, cherry dessert and ice cream. 

Chil Cookoff and Bingo in Casey Jan. 24

Chili entries can be brought to the Casey Community Center from 4-5 p.m. with a freewill dinner beginning at 5:30 p.m. Entries will be awarded in four categories (spiciest, most unique, best overall, and people’s choice). Bingo begins at 6:30 p.m.

Bingo in Guthrie Center

American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 124 will hold three Saturday night bingo events in the coming months at the Guthrie Center Activity Center, 2098 State St. The events will be held on Jan. 24, Feb. 28 and March 28. A freewill donation dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. with bingo starting at 7 p.m.

Dueling Pianos in Adair Feb. 13

On Friday, Feb. 13, the Adair Chamber of Commerce will host the event to raise funds for Chuckwagon Days. The event will run from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Community Center (308 Stuart St.) in Adair. Cost is $40 pre-sale and $50 at the door. Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be available. BYOB, and a limited amount of free beer will be available.

Monteith City Council Minutes

Editor’s note: Monteith is an unincorporated community in Guthrie County. Residents in or around the area gather monthly to share updates on projects and celebrate milestones. Following are the “minutes” from the affectionally named “Monteith City Council Meeting.” We are pleased to publish these as submitted.

Mayor JD Kuster was under the weather for the first Monteith Council Meeting of 2026 on Jan. 13. Barry Branson presided over the meeting ,opening with the Pledge of Allegiance. There were 16 members in attendance.

January birthdays include:

  • Kathy Kuster Jan. 4
  • Gina Lloyd 5
  • Suann Camden 15
  • Jim Smith 20.

We sang “Happy Birthday!” (If you can call it singing.)

Years ago, not one couple braved having a January wedding, so we didn’t have any to celebrate. Wonder how many Valentine’s month anniversaries we will have?

We discussed the sign that was made for the rock at Monteith City Park. It is finished and looks great. Thanks to JD for getting that done. Now, it just needs to be attached to the rock this spring.

Jeff and Natalie are working on getting information on the sign that we need to repair on the east side of Monteith. Once we get a price, we will dig deeper into how to fund it. Thank you to Jeff and Natalie for taking down decorations at Guthrie City Park and the decorations in Monteith.

The Derrys have been very active with decorations the past two months, and it is much appreciated. Barry will be repainting The Monteith “Outhouse Signs”  that are displayed year round at Andersen’s. Rog & Jean are at the heart of Monteith.

Dues were collected from everyone in attendance.

Dates of upcoming meetings:

  • Zoning Commission: Friday, Jan. 23 at 1 p.m.
  • February Council Meeting: Tuesday, Feb. 10. It was suggested we go to a restaurant for this meeting. We discussed 5 p.m., but no location was decided on. We will keep everyone posted on that.

Jim Smith motioned for the meeting to adjourn, and Jeff Derry seconded the motion.
