Dakota pickup collides with parked vehicle in Stuart

Guthrie County Deputy Sheriff Todd Thorn reported an accident involving two vehicles on April 6 at 9:45 a.m. on Sherman Street in Menlo.  Patricia Kay Trent, 86, of Stuart was driving a 2004 Dodge Dakota pickup southbound on Sherman Street and collided with a legally parked 2018 Chevrolet Equinox. Trent advised that she did not know she hit the other vehicle. Deputy Thorn viewed security cameras that captured the accident.  The Equinox incurred an estimated $1,400 in damage. 

VW rear-ends Hyundai on Highway 4

Guthrie County Deputy Sheriff Blake Michelsen reported a two-vehicle collision occurring on April 13 at 9:55 a.m. on Highway 4 and 200th Street. Jacob Lane Kelderman, 24, of Waukee, was driving a 2015 Hyundai Accent northbound and turning left onto 200th Street when the vehicle was rear-ended by Hannah Marie Stark, 23, of Stuart, who was driving a 2012 Volkswagen Passat. The Volkswagen incurred an estimated $5,000 in damage and the Hyundai had an estimated $6,000.  Stark was issued citations for no insurance-accident related, expired registration, and failure to stop at safe and sure distance. 

Crown Victoria rolls, driver life-flighted to Des Moines

Guthrie County Deputy Sheriff Kent Gries reported a single-vehicle accident occurring on April 5 at 9 a.m. on Utopia Avenue. Dylan Mckenzie Burchfield, 16, of Panora, was driving a 1987 Ford Crown Victoria southbound at the 1800 block of Utopia Avenue and lost control at a high speed, leaving the roadway to the west ditch and landing on the drivers side. Burchfield struck the west ditch and a tree. Fire and Panora EMS responded to the accident, and Burchfield was removed from the vehicle through non-mechanical means. Due to the potential for serious injuries, Life Flight was requested and responded to the scene. A landing zone was set up with the assistance of Panora EMS and Panora Fire. Life Flight transported Burchfield to an unknown Des Moines hospital. Burchfield was appropriately restrained, and the airbags deployed in front of her. The collision is estimated to have occurred up to 45 minutes prior to law enforcement being notified due to Burchfield being trapped in the vehicle with no means to call for help. Burchfield eventually located her Apple Watch and called her father, who then called 911. The vehicle was estimated to be a total loss with more than $4,000 in damage. 

Ram truck backs into Camry in Jamaica

Guthrie County Deputy Sheriff Matt Losee was called to the scene of a parking space accident on April 6 at 7:37 p.m. in Jamaica. Dennis Dean Mleynk, 62, of Panora, was backing up a 2021 Ram 2500 Tradesman pickup out of a parking space and scraped the driver’s mirror and door of a 2019 Toyota Camry, causing an estimated $3,000 in damage. Mleynk stated that he didn’t know he hit the vehicle.

F-150 rolls over on Redwood, catches fire during tow

Guthrie County Deputy Sheriff Blake Michelsen reported a single-vehicle rollover accident occurring on April 14 at 8:52 a.m. on Redwood Avenue just north of Monteith. Cameron Joel Hester, 31, of Guthrie Center, was driving a 1983 For F-150 pickup and lost control, rolling over into the west ditch and landing on the passenger side. Michelsen reported that when he arrived on the scene, no driver or operator was present. He stated that a short time later, the vehicle was towed for the registered owner. During the tow, the vehicle caught on fire and the Guthrie Center Fire Department was called to extinguish it. Michelsen reported that when he talked with Hester, he admitted to driving the vehicle and said he lost control when swerving to miss a deer. The F-150 was estimated to be a total loss with more than $10,000 in damage. Hester was issued a citation for failure to maintain control.
