Will the iPhone meet the same demise as the Walkman?

If you had to name a device that defined how people of a specific era listened to music, what would you offer? Today, the options seem endless. Seems like just yesterday when the iPod was invented. Then streaming music. And now smart home devices. But how about past decades?

The jukebox for the 1950s? Albums on console stereos for the 1960s? How about 8-track players for the 1970s? And then there were the 1980s, the era when I attended high school and college. What would you suggest represents music listening habits for that timeframe? Cassette recorders? CD players?

For people of all ages in the 1980s, it was all about the Sony Walkman. That single device changed how we listened to music, and it added an element of “cool” to cassettes. Sony truly was “the one and only.” I vividly remember my first Walkman. Silver metallic. Cassette only. (Who needed radio?) Lightweight headphones. Telescopic case. I listened to my cassettes in that player for countless hours. And when it finally wore out, I bought the yellow Walkman Sports version.

The original Walkman launched in Tokyo in 1979. Ultimately, total production of Walkman units surpassed 200 million globally with more than 300 different Walkman models. But as cassettes became less popular, so did the Walkman, and this seemingly must-have gadget came to an end in 2010.

Will the iPhone meet the same demise? Seems unlikely today, but many of us Walkman users thought the same in the 1980s.

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thanks for reading.

Solar storm brings spectacular views

Ruth Rowedder captured these photos on Friday night from the LPA dog park. The images are of the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights, in various hues and settings. This natural phenomenon occurs when the sun’s energy interacts with the Earth’s atmosphere. The northern lights were visible as far south as Florida due to an extreme geomagnetic storm, the strongest to hit Earth in 20 years.

Charger boys take first at 1A state qualifier

By Cyote Williams | Times Vedette

It was business as usual for the ACGC boys track and field team. The Chargers placed first with 161 points at the 1A state qualifier meet in Earlham on Thursday, May 9. First-place finishes at the state qualifier result in an automatic bid to the state meet at Drake Stadium May 16-18. ACGC athletes who placed first and will be heading to Des Moines later this May are Brexton Schneider in the 110-meter hurdles, Andrew Mahaffey in both the 1600- and 3200-meter runs, Lance Bunde in the high jump, and Mike Fuller in discus and the 4×200 meter relay team. It’s possible for other athletes to qualify for the state meet, and they will hopefully find out later today.

Once they’re available, results will be posted on IHSAA’s website, www.iahsaa.org. According to the IHSAA, “In Class 1A, the top place winner in each event plus the next 14 best performances statewide from qualifying meet place winners will advance to the state meet. If there are ties, the highest qualifying meet place winner (1st – 8th) will be the qualifier.”

ACGC results:
