No. 5 ACGC wins close battle with Coon Rapids-Bayard, 60-56

The No. 5 ACGC boys basketball team (17-1) hosted Coon Rapids-Bayard (17-2) on Thursday, Feb. 7. This was a back-and-forth contest from start to finish. ACGC trailed by two points at the end of the first quarter. A solid second quarter saw the Chargers go into halftime up by four, 30-26. ACGC and Coon Rapids-Bayard tied in scoring during the second half, giving ACGC the four-point victory. ACGC is back in action tonight, Friday, Feb. 7, at Pleasantville (9-9). Pleasantville won last year’s matchup, 62-57.

Chargers to compete in 1A District 9 meet next Saturday

ACGC boys wrestling will compete at the 1A District 9 meet at South Hamilton High School on Saturday, Feb. 15. ACGC will compete against AGWSR, South Central Calhoun, Don Bosco, Manson-NW Webster, North Tama, Ogden, Pocahontas Area, St. Edmond and host South Hamilton. A few Charger wrestlers participated in the Atlantic JV tournament at Atlantic High School on Thursday, Feb. 6. Angel Martinez placed first at 161-171. Morgun Nolte placed third at 151-156. Erling Riis placed eighth at 148-160.

Panthers win 2 duals at Audubon quadrangular

Panorama boys wrestling competed at the Audubon quadrangular on Thursday, Feb. 6. Panorama won duals against Coon Rapids-Bayard, 33-32, and against host Audubon, 53-17. Panorama lost to Southeast Polk, 43-31. The post season begins for Panorama next week when the team travels to Interstate 35 on Saturday, Feb. 15 for the 1A District 4 meet. The Panthers will compete against Earlham, Logan-Magnolia, Interstate 35, AHSTW, Central Decatur, Woodbine, Martensdale-St. Marys, Southeast Warren and Wayne.

Panther boys struggle in loss against Woodward-Granger, 77-35

Panorama boys basketball (3-16) played Woodward-Granger (7-12) away from home on Tuesday, Feb. 4. The Panthers let the game get away from them in the second half after going into halftime down 13 points. Eli Hammerstrom led the team in scoring with 11 points. Cruz Crandall and Brayden Galvan were next closest with seven apiece. Crandall led the team in rebounds with eight. Galvan led in assists with three. Panorama will face a tough test when the team travels to Des Moines Christian (13-5) tonight, Friday, Feb. 7.

Panorama girls fall to Woodward-Granger, 58-37

On Tuesday, Feb. 4, Panorama girls basketball (10-9) lost its away game to Woodward-Granger (11-8). Nerea Gimeno Perez led the Panthers in scoring with 15 points. Morgan Crees and Ruth Fett tied for second most with seven each. Panorama has struggled as of late, going 1-4 in its last five games. The team will have a big test tonight, Friday, Feb. 7, when the Panthers travel to the WCAC’s No. 1 team this season, No. 10 Des Moines Christian (16-3). These teams have almost evenly split since 2006, with Des Moines Christian holding a 17-15 lead in the series. DMC barely came away victorious in last year’s meeting, beating Panorama 41-40.
