UP AND WAY UP! Roofers were working at the Guthrie County State Bank, foreground, last week while climbers were in the background dismantling a communications tower at the former Guthrie Automotive location. Owner Steve Brubaker reported the tower stretched more than 145 feet into the air. A crane from Des Moines lifted sections of the tower to the ground.

SMOKE-FREE. Dean Downing, a custodian at the Guthrie County Courthouse, installs a no smoking sign at one of the courthouse’s five entrances. The building officially became smoke-free Monday. Previously, smoking was allowed in the building’s hallways and bathrooms.

1974 WINNER. Kimberly Rumelhart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Rumelhart, learns after reading an issue of the Guthrie Center Newspapers she will soon relinquish her crown as the county’s first baby. Kimberly was one of the latest arrivals in the traditional contest as she wasn’t born until Jan. 27, 1974.

Panther fans dressed in blue, many in DOMinate T-shirts to show their support in memory of Dominic.

“TWISTED” SANTAS. Last weekend in Casey was the scene of a packed Community Building where the “Better Keep Our Day Jobs” players put on the fourth annual dinner theater production of “Twas With A Twist.” The hilarious musical included many local talents including Barry Orness, left, of Casey playing the “real” Santa and Pete Fay, right, of Adair, who played Ezra “Pa” Inniscap and the “fake” Santa. Some other cast members included Gretchen Umbaugh (“Ma” Inniscap), Rita Elgin (Magic Myrtle), Jade Weber (Betsy Inniscap), all of Adair, Kayla Plagman (Sam Neer), Jeannie Larson (Mrs. Claus), Pat Pettinger (The Mouse), Shawna Tuffin (Babs Inniscap), Steven Tuffin (Mop Top), all of Casey, and a host of elves and Sugar Plum Fairies. The group also puts on a variety show each spring.

MURAL PAINTER. Mike Rosenbeck, a senior art student, applies highlighting to make a horse’s head stand out on a desert mural Guthrie Center art students are painting at the Jaycee Community Hall. Students from Phil Pryzchodzin’s art classes have spent three hours a day for the last week and a half painting the mural requested by the Jaycees. The mural painting has added a new dimension to the art program at the Guthrie Center school.
